Event Details
Stephen Schwartz and Roger O. Hirson’s visionary musical Pippin unfolds as a mesmerizing meta-theatrical experience, brought to life by a traveling troupe of performers under the seductive guidance of the mysterious Leading Player. This charismatic ringmaster serves as both narrator and manipulator, orchestrating the coming-of-age story of Prince Pippin, the idealistic heir to King Charlemagne’s Frankish throne, with equal parts showmanship and sinister intent.
Fresh from his university studies and brimming with naive optimism, Pippin embarks on an existential quest to find his “corner of the sky” - that singular purpose that will make his life extraordinary. The Leading Player and their troupe tempt him through a series of increasingly extravagant and dangerous adventures, each more alluring than the last. Pippin tests the glory of war in the rousing Glory, only to discover its horrifying costs. He indulges in hedonistic pleasures and sexual liberation with his captivating grandmother Berthe in the show-stopping No Time at All. He even attempts political revolution and regal responsibility, stepping into his father’s crown with disastrous results. Yet with each new experience, Pippin grows more disillusioned, realizing that fulfillment cannot be found in extremes - a revelation that threatens the Leading Player’s carefully constructed spectacle.
Featuring Schwartz’s unforgettable score, from the haunting opener Magic to Do to the plaintive ballad Corner of the Sky, and brought to life through Bob Fosse’s original, Tony-winning choreography (reimagined in the 2013 revival with breathtaking acrobatics), Pippin dazzles with its theatrical magic while delivering a surprisingly profound meditation on maturity and meaning. The musical’s bright, carnival-like atmosphere gradually gives way to darker undertones, exposing the emptiness behind the Leading Player’s promises and the terrifying price of extraordinary pursuits.
First captivating audiences in 1972 and winning five Tonys including Best Musical, then triumphantly revived in 2013 with additional Fosse material and circus-inspired staging, Pippin remains a timeless exploration of youthful idealism colliding with hard-won wisdom. It’s a show that challenges its audience to look beyond the glittering surface, asking uncomfortable questions about what truly constitutes an “extraordinary” life - and who gets to define it.

Compagnie Hervé Koubi Sol Invictus

Absolutely unique and utterly original, this fearless, powerful company reigns from France, Algeria, and beyond. Combining contemporary and urban dance movements, capoeira, and martial arts with powerful imagery and inspired choreography, the dancers defy gravity. Inspired by Algerian author Yasmina Khadra’s novel, What The Day Owes To The Night traces Koubi’s own personal lineage as a French-Algerian choreographer. After learning about his family’s Algerian roots, Koubi returned to the country of his ancestors to collaborate with street dance performers from across the Mediterranean basin. What emerged is “a creation of poetic beauty” (The New York Times), a meditative yet strikingly athletic work about the ties that bind us.

Counterpoint is a collaboration between pianist and composer Conrad Tao and choreographer and dancer Caleb Teicher. The duo explore the dichotomy of their different perspectives and artistic practices, expanding their individual expressive capacity through a collective experience. Harmonic, rhythmic, and theatrical counterpoint between the artists seeks to map out constellations linking their disparate traditions, driving the imagination and opening the heart. The stylistically diverse music of Counterpoint includes the Aria from Bach’s Goldberg Variations, Art Tatum’s demented stride piano, Arnold Schoenberg’s ironic take on the Viennese waltz, a delicate miniature from Tao and Teicher’s More Forever, and threading it all together, a work that bridges traditions, approaches, and styles—Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. Tao and Teicher’s earlier work, More Forever, is a Bessie Award-winning, New York Times critic’s pick which was lauded for “constantly extending the sonic aspects of dance.”

RIGOLETTO is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi. The Italian libretto was written by Francesco Maria Piave based on the 1832 play LE ROI S’AMUSE by Victor Hugo. Despite serious initial problems with the Austrian censors who had control over northern Italian theatres at the time, the opera had a triumphant premiere at La Fenice in Venice on 11 March 1851. The work, Verdi’s sixteenth in the genre, is widely considered to be the first of the operatic masterpieces of Verdi’s middle-to-late career. The tragic story revolves around the licentious Duke of Mantua, his hunch-backed

The Mikado is undoubtedly the most popular piece of musical theatre of all time, when its 135-year history is taken into account. For decades, a production of G&S’s satirical opera could be seen somewhere in the English-speaking world every day of the year. Its libretto has found its way into our language, with expressions such as the “grand Pooh-Bah” and “Let the punishment fit the crime.” Several films have been made of or about the work, including Mike Leigh’s 1999 film Topsy-Turvy, which presented an intimate portrait of the characters of W.S. Gilbert, Arthur Sullivan, and the repertory cast of the original D’Oyly Carte Opera Company, following G&S’s inspiration and development of the very first Mikado production.
In 2016 New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players created the production of The Mikado that you are about to see. Our goal was simple and it remains the same now: to forge a path through the 21st century so that The Mikado can be forever enjoyed by all audiences and artists. The show opened to sold out crowds and critical acclaim in December of 2016, was revived in 2019, and has been on tour all over the USA. We are proud to share this production, which upholds The Mikado’s musical score, setting, characters, storytelling, themes, and most of all its universal satire of human nature, with you today.
Our reimagined production starts with a short, original prologue. After you enjoy the soaring overture brilliantly played by the NYGASP Orchestra, the curtain opens not on the fictional Japanese town of Titipu, but on the imagined offices of the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company on the morning after their successful opening night of Princess Ida, which Gilbert & Sullivan wrote immediately before The Mikado. This short scene sets the stage for our concept of The Mikado as a story imagined (in real time) inside the mind of our author, W. S. Gilbert, who was inspired by the Japanese artifacts he has just seen, the conversations he has just had and the colleagues with whom he has just interacted. At the end of the Prologue, we are launched dramatically into a Titipu of Pure Imagination, and we are right back to Sullivan's score and Gilbert's libretto that we all know and love!

COME SEE HOW THE WORLD COULD BE.
Welcome to HADESTOWN, where a song can change your fate. Winner of eight 2019 Tony Awards® including Best Musical and the 2020 Grammy® Award for Best Musical Theater Album, this acclaimed new show from celebrated singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and original director Rachel Chavkin (Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812) is a love story for today… and always.
HADESTOWN intertwines two mythic tales — that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone — as it invites you on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Mitchell’s beguiling melodies and Chavkin’s poetic imagination pit industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love. Performed by a vibrant ensemble of actors, dancers and singers, HADESTOWN is a haunting and hopeful theatrical experience that grabs you and never lets go.

Accompanied by his six-piece jazz band, “Mizrahi is the real deal when it comes to cabaret: He’s charming, he sounds great, and he is seriously funny” (TheaterMania).

Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain

Formed in 1985 as the antidote to mindless pop, egocentric rock, and the indulgent, bluster of the music business, The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain donned black tuxedos, and began giving ‘concerts’ in tiny rooms above old pubs.
Four decades (and 400,000,000 plucks) later they’re still thrilling audiences with their off-beat humor and four-stringed virtuosity from Tasmania to the Arctic Circle, Windsor Castle to Carnegie Hall.
There are no drums, pianos, backing tracks, guitars, or banjos, no pitch shifters or electronic trickery – just an astonishing revelation of the rich palette of orchestration afforded by ukuleles and a menagerie of voices in a collision of post-punk performance and old classics.

Featuring Rachmaninoff’s most beloved compositions, this promises to be another mystical musical journey in the Hershey Felder style that patrons have come to know and love. Hershey Felder: Rachmaninoff and the Tsar runs approximately one hour and forty minutes, with no intermission, and is followed by a brief talk back.
