Compagnie Hervรฉ Koubi Sol Invictus

Absolutely unique and utterly original, this fearless, powerful company reigns from France, Algeria, and beyond. Combining contemporary and urban dance movements, capoeira, and martial arts with powerful imagery and inspired choreography, the dancers defy gravity. Inspired by Algerian author Yasmina Khadraโ€™s novel,  What The Day Owes To The Night traces Koubiโ€™s own personal lineage as a French-Algerian choreographer. After learning about his familyโ€™s Algerian roots, Koubi returned to the country of his ancestors to collaborate with street dance performers from across the Mediterranean basin. What emerged is โ€œa creation of poetic beautyโ€ (The New York Times), a meditative yet strikingly athletic work about the ties that bind us.

Counterpoint

Counterpoint is a collaboration between pianist and composer Conrad Tao and choreographer and dancer Caleb Teicher. The duo explore the dichotomy of their different perspectives and artistic practices, expanding their individual expressive capacity through a collective experience. Harmonic, rhythmic, and theatrical counterpoint between the artists seeks to map out constellations linking their disparate traditions, driving the imagination and opening the heart. The stylistically diverse music of Counterpoint includes the Aria from Bachโ€™s Goldberg Variations, Art Tatumโ€™s demented stride piano, Arnold Schoenbergโ€™s ironic take on the Viennese waltz, a delicate miniature from Tao and Teicherโ€™s More Forever, and threading it all together, a work that bridges traditions, approaches, and stylesโ€”Gershwinโ€™s Rhapsody in Blue. Tao and Teicherโ€™s earlier work, More Forever, is a Bessie Award-winning, New York Times criticโ€™s pick which was lauded for โ€œconstantly extending the sonic aspects of dance.โ€
