Bar Cecil opened to friends and family (and media) on Saturday. It’s one of many new businesses that are wading into the waters of starting a venture as we come out of the pandemic. From retail to computer repair, printing and galleries, we have a plethora of new LGBTQ owned/operated businesses. When you’re looking for these businesses and others who support our communities, our LGBTQ Business Directory is the place to start for recommendations.
It’s important to not only #ShopLocal, but also think of our LGBTQ businesses first when making buying decisions. We tag each business profile with a designation of LGBTQ owned/operated and whether they are a member of the DBA, Desert Business Association. That’s our LGBTQ chamber of commerce, which also has the added benefit of certifying businesses nationally through the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC).

Event Details
- Each year Dining Out For Life (DOFL) happens as an annual fundraising event raising money for community-based organizations, like DAP Health, that help people impacted by or living with HIV. Traditionally, on this day participating restaurants donate anywhere from 33% to over 100%+ of daily sales for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or otherwise.
- Because of the struggles that many of our restaurants have had this last year with COVID, we have decided that instead of asking for financial support from restaurants we are asking the community to please support locally-owned restaurants by ordering take-out or dining in / eating out on April 29th.
- This year for DOFL, there will not be ambassadors at restaurants. If you would like to donate to DAP Health for DOFL this year please click here to make a generous gift today.

Event Details
- Time for Equality maintains the tradition of the LGBTQ community to build from historic election victories into historic change across the country. By electing pro-Equality leaders and lawmakers, HRC supporters set the stage for progress. Now is the time to ensure that important LGBTQ priorities move forward and protect the progress that have been achieved.
- 2021 has been a year filled with challenges and the promise of a better, more equal tomorrow — and, through it all, you have been by our side. As we look ahead, we want to make sure you are informed and ready to keep up the crucial work for advancing equality. As we approach the 100th day of the Biden-Harris administration, your engagement is vital to our fight to ensure equal rights for the LGBTQ community. We are now working tirelessly to pass the Equality Act, which will soon head to the U.S. Senate for consideration, fight back against a multitude of anti-LGBTQ legislation in states nationwide and ensure everyone in our community is treated with dignity and respect.
- That's why we are proud to announce Time For Equality, an online event experience! Through this event, we will bring together members and supporters of equality from across the country to engage with HRC in our work. This event will be live streamed on Thursday, April 22, 2021.
- We have a variety of ticket levels, including a no-cost option, because we want to make sure everyone can access this event. For those who can make a donation, we are offering special premiums for the paid ticket levels.

Event Details
- Gay Desert Fun & Games Dept. and TheMenEvent.com present A Gay Romp Through Four Centuries of Opera.
-
Renowned opera critic and historian Fred Plotkin gives exciting talk on opera at its most joyously queer!
-
Can't make the live event? Buy a ticket for the recording and watch the event in your own time! See FAQs below for more info.
-
Opera has been about passion, drama, politics, passion, sex and more sex since its creation in 1597. It has been a “safe zone” since its beginnings in terms of personal expression of love and eros even in the face of censorship from churches and governments. This censorship, in fact, emboldened composers and librettists to be even more creative in depicting the passions of the mind and the human heart.
- Fred Plotkin, universally regarded as one of the world’s foremost opera experts as well as a passionate speaker, will explore how sexuality in all of its expressions merged with politics and supreme musicianship to make opera the most radical of all the performing arts. To paraphrase the great Anna Russell: “You can do anything you want in opera so long as you sing it!”
- Among the topics Plotkin will address are depictions in opera of gender fluidity and the degree to which it is an element in the creation, story-telling and performance of opera. Among the operas he will explore are L’Incoronazione di Poppea, Giulio Cesare, Le Nozze di Figaro, La Clemenza di Tito, Fidelio, Roberto Devereux, Tannhäuser, Die Walküre, Un Ballo in Maschera, Don Carlo, Die Fledermaus, Der Rosenkavalier, Lulu, Billy Budd, Death in Venice and As Is.
- Speaker Bio
- Fred Plotkin is renowned for his expertise in opera as well as food and wine and the joyful passion with which he shares his knowledge. He is the author of the classic Opera 101: A Complete Guide to Learning and Loving Opera and six cookbooks. He has worked at La Scala and the Metropolitan Opera and spoken in most of the top opera venues in the world from San Francisco to Salzburg. He is the opera expert for New York Times Journeys and hosts Fred Plotkin on Fridays, a weekly program of cultured conversations on www.idagio.com
