Tolerance Education Center is excited to present the work of Linda Witte Henke a contemporary designer and artist specializing in work that is spiritually expressive. Her work, Kristallnacht, recently drew my attention when it appeared in the Summer 2023 edition of Fiber Arts Now magazine.
Kristallnacht and other exploratory works, as well as Sticks and Stones, a 42-piece meditation on the state of contemporary discourse, will be on display at TEC through the end of the year.
Sticks and Stones and Exploratory Works by Linda Witte Henke showcases a stunning collection of innovative fiber artworks that is expressive of spiritual themes, social issues, and personal experience.
Henke’s work can offer an educational jumping off point for discussions with your students about tolerance, civil discourse, and the power of verbal expression. Each abstract collage is accompanied by an inspirational quote from a range of sources that invites conversation. From Henke:
Sticks and Stones collection of 43 (matted and framed) collages began as a lament over the deterioration in the tone of public discourse in our nation and grew into a broader exploration of the impact of words in all human relationships. The works were created from a variety of repurposed papers – books, hymnals, maps, bibles, musical scores, phone books, catalogues, magazines, etc. – in combination with surface-design and print-making techniques. Each work features a quotation linked to sticks-and-stones imagery to invite reflection on the significance of human verbal expression. The collages measure 8 inches wide by 10 inches high; the framed dimensions are 11 inches wide by 14 inches high by 1 inch deep.
In Addition to the 42-piece Sticks and Stones, we have five unique exploratory works that bring up the following themes: current rise in antisemitism, erosion of truth telling as a shared value, moving beyond tolerance to create community, and irresponsible behavior in crisis.

In participation with Yucca Valley’s 3rd Saturday Art Walk (December 16, 2023 from 5PM-8PM), Joshua Tree National Park Association presents “Desert Winter”: Safely Finding Your Solitude. This will be a group show featuring Southern California artist’s interpretation of our desert winters at Joshua Tree National Park. Winter temperatures can drop well below freezing inside the national park. Hypothermia can be a hazard even at temperatures above freezing. The short days of winter lead some hikers to miscalculate how much time they need to complete a hike. The show will feature photography, ceramics, paintings, textile art and more. Proceeds from the show will directly benefit the protection and preservation efforts of Joshua Tree National Park.

Lesbians of Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley and beyond presents B.A.M. Salon (Book and Movie Salon) for women hosted by Flynn Sylvest and Irma O’Dell.
(BAM Salon) looks to develop and deepen LGBTQ+ community and connection through stimulating and informative conversations about books and movies that highlight women authors and women's stories and experiences.
"Salon" references a centuries rich history of social gatherings from around the world most often run by women. Creative minds come together for the art of conversation, learning and social pleasure. Gertrude Stein and Zora Neale Hurston ran noteworthy salons in the U.S. in the 1920's which were famous for bringing together innovative thinkers and artists. We hope you join us for a taste of vintage mutual education, enrichment and social fun!
The B.A.M. Salons will take place virtually on the third Tuesdays of the month from 7:00-8:30pm.
We plan to alternate monthly between books and movies.
