4/20 day starts off the week as a cannabis consumer’s high holiday. Not likely to gain federal status as an official holiday, the day has California origins dating back to 1971.
Students at San Rafael High School are attributed with coining the phrase as the time of 4:20 pm was when they met to search for a hidden cannabis patch. They were known as “the Waldo’s” and so it began.
One of The Waldos brothers was friends with Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh, and the slang spread. The first official reporting by High Times magazine in the early 1990’s was by reporter Steve Bloom. He was handed a flier about a 4:20 pm celebration on 4/20 for smoking weed collectively in Marin County.
The day certainly has caught on over the years! KGAY’s program director and afternoon host Chris Shebel will be marking the day with a live broadcast at Double Eye Dispensary. Some 24 states and D.C. have legalized the wildwood weed. 40 states recognize medical benefits and have allowed various strengths to be sold.
Our government in its infinite wisdom still has marijuana as a Schedule 1 illegal drug, like cocaine. Ten states remain where recreational and medical cannabis aren’t permitted: Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
Cannabis was used extensively during the AIDS epidemic in our LGBTQ+ community to combat pain and wasting syndrome. At that time, there were no pharmaceutical treatments available, so bringing comfort during one’s last days was tantamount. Queer activists helped move the legalization process along because of what we experienced. Our community’s activism around the topic greatly increased public support for access to cannabis, according to Wikipedia.
When legal drugs starting hitting the market, getting those potential life-saving drugs was difficult at best. I still love the movie, Dallas Buyer’s Club, where Matthew MConaughey portrays a real-life Ron Woodroof who distributed HIV drugs at his motel room in the 80s. Cannabis buyer’s clubs cropped up as well, documented in the film linked here.
My tolerance and enjoyment of cannabis has waned over the years. I didn’t start until college and still remember my first “trip”. Along the way, cannabis consumption has been a social lubricant for me, just like smoking cigarettes is for others. Some of my best friendships came about because of our mutual love of a good buzz!
It’s spawned many a great memory in the recesses of my brain and provided hours of giggles, introspection and relaxation. So Happy 4/20 Day one and all, thanks to a bunch of Bay Area high school kids on a mission to catch a buzz!
