A powerful new exhibition, Section 14: The Untold Story, debuts Friday, June 14 in the Changing Gallery at the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum. Presented by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, this exhibition shares the Tribe’s perspective on the contested history of Section 14, a one-square-mile area in the heart of Palm Springs that has long been central to their land and culture.
For centuries, the Agua Caliente people have called this land home, safeguarding the ancient hot mineral spring at its center. But the history of Section 14 is one of struggle and resilience, as private interests sought to take control of the land and deny the Tribe’s sovereignty. This exhibition sheds light on the fight to reclaim and protect their rightful heritage.
At the heart of Section 14: The Untold Story is a 16-minute documentary, in which Tribal Elders share firsthand accounts of life on Section 14 and the hardships endured. Surrounding the film, historical documents from local, state, and national archives detail the legal battles, land disputes, and ongoing efforts to safeguard the Tribe’s culture and rights.
“This is our home, and it has been since time immemorial,” said Tribal Chairman Reid D. Milanovich. “We invite you to hear our perspectives and learn about our efforts to assert rightful sovereignty over our land.”
The exhibition is included with Museum admission and runs in the Changing Gallery at the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum, located at 140 N. Indian Canyon Drive in Palm Springs. The museum is open Tuesday–Sunday from 10 am–5 pm and closed on Mondays. For tickets and more details, visit accmuseum.org/tickets.
