A milestone 25th anniversary occurs this Friday, Sept. 11. As I watched news coverage recounting our nation’s tragic day when the US was attacked by terrorists, there was some grace given for how then-President George W. Bush handled the situation.
If you remember, he was at an elementary school reading to young children when his chief of staff whispered in his ear what was unfolding. We remember the video of him continuing for a few minutes as his staff prepared to use that school as a staging ground for a press conference and situation room before he was whisked away.
Those of us who are old enough to remember will never forget where we were on 9/11. I was in the world’s largest commercial building in the United States – the Merchandise Mart in Chicago. It housed Q-101 radio where I was working at the time. All major cities were put on high alert and we ultimately were excused and the building closed as it was thought to be a target.
My co-worker’s brother was typically in the World Trade Center at that time each week, and we watched CNN in horror as the buildings burnt and ultimately imploded. There were no attacks on Chicago and as fate would have it, her brother was not in the North tower that day.
Then there are the Come From Away stories. Our neighbors to the north, Canada, took in nearly 7,000 passengers when all planes were ordered grounded. The bonds that were made from their time in Gander, Newfoundland live on, and the musical is a wonderful reminder of human kindness. Even in light of Trump’s treatment of Canada, I’m sure they would react in the same way today.
But our country has certainly changed. While George Bush wasn’t a great president for our LGBTQ+ community, in retrospect he was a far cry from what we have today. And 25 years ago, the Senate had a bit of a spine. I can’t imagine how this administration would handle another 9/11. After all, it’s the same bunch that brought us a botched COVID-19 response.
In just under 60 days, we’ll be going to the polls for the 2026 Midterm Election. It’s just under 800 days till we vote for President again. It’s incumbent upon each of us to vote – and encourage others who are like-minded to do the same. Our LGBTQ+ community has much at stake.
