It was a little chilling — as temperatures approach record highs next week — to hear the FCC chairman ask broadcasters to run “pro-America” patriotic content. His remarks came ahead of our 250th anniversary celebration set for this July 4th. It’s set to be a truly appalling display of Trump’s self-congratulatory, gold-encrusted world.
I suspect their version of what is patriotic content and mine may differ. Remember, FCC Chair Brandon Carr is the guy who has opened an investigation into ABC’s The View over its Texas Senate hopeful James Talarico interview. It likely coerced CBS to cut another Talarico interview from the traditional broadcast of Stephen Colbert’s Late Show. That blew up in their face when millions watched on YouTube!
No, my view of what counts as patriotic content on KGAY 103.1 involves our LGBTQ+ communities and causes that the administration would like to eliminate: Trans rights, medical care for the needy, food banks, HIV prevention, conservation, homeless services. Those have been the causes we’ve donated thousands of minutes of airtime to with the “KGAY Cares” public service campaign.
I got the idea from the radio stations where Chris Shebel and I cut our teeth on early in our careers. We worked for WSPT/WXYQ radio in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. The stations employed a fulltime news team, gave the hog reports and played polka music each morning to help the cows give milk better (really!)
Those stations had a similar public service campaign where community members came into the station to record their messages and help inform the community about the services they offered. No solicitation for money, no promoting events. I brought “KGAY Cares” to the station when I purchased it, and currently have the freedom to decide what constitutes “pro-American” content.
We also air an LGBTQ-specific public affairs show called This Way Out. You’ll find it under “Podcasts” on our streaming player.
I hope I’ll continue to have the right to determine what’s best for our community. But I know that the FCC ultimately determines our fate as a federally licensed broadcaster. For now, I’m not starting our broadcast day with the national anthem or pledge of allegiance. Rather, I’ll be raising our voices for the resistance to the tyranny of Trump.
