Gay Desert Guide: Week of July 13, 2026

Over the years, I’ve been referred to as the “unofficial mayor of Palm Springs” because of my involvement in so many events and causes through Gay Desert Guide and KGAY 103.1.

Then the question, “Why don’t you run for mayor?”

I’m flattered, of course. I did run for mayor once in my high school student council (and was defeated). But that’s the nearest I’ve come and it was 50 years ago.

My answer, however, is always the same: In today’s social media-driven world, I wouldn’t want the job because the internet moves at the speed of light. And government moves at, well, the speed of an injured sloth.

So the court of public opinion, driven by groups like Gay Men of Palm Springs CA and I Love Downtown Palm Springs, is judge and jury for what happens not only in local government but also in our bubble as a whole. Members pronounces something true or false, right or wrong, sometimes incorrectly and it’s out there for consumption by the masses.

That’s not to say that their moderators don’t do a good job of catching complete falsehoods and outlandish statements. But each have their own biases and viewpoints that color the groups. There’s no way around that. They are editors just like a newspaper or other news source.

Instead of a newspaper full of factual stories with a “Letters to the Editor” section, the opinions are now the headlines. “News” is commentary, hearsay and opinion of a broad and diverse group of citizens. It’s not vetted the way a news article is, nor are the contributors trained journalists.

Niels Kosman, co-owner of PS Homeboys, wrote “A love letter to Palm Springs”, on the GMPS group’s Facebook page. In it he despairs on how we are devolving from what this beautiful community was about when he and his partner moved here — supporting each other during COVID, for example — to the negativity that permeates.

He poses: “You disagree with something or someone? Go to a City Council meeting. Write people privately. Go have lunch.” It’s good to remember that advice and also try to keep civility in our discourse – both online and in person.

• Wanderlust Food Truck Festival at Sunrise Park • This community gathering features a curated lineup of over 20 food trucks and local vendors. Guests can enjoy gourmet street food, family-friendly lawn games, and open seating at Sunrise Park on Saturday from 5–10 pm.
• The Book of Merman • Prism Theater presents a new musical comedy that brings together missionaries and a legendary Broadway diva for a humorous revelation. The show runs Saturdays & Sundays through July 26.
• From Struggle to Strength • “Increase Love in Action” is the featured topic for this meditation class led by the Dharmachakra Kadampa Buddhist Center on Sunday from 10–11:30 am. Participants will learn transformative meditations to respond to life’s challenges with patience, love, and clarity.
