Age before beauty!, the saying goes. I’m going first a lot more these days, especially this week. On the eve of my 68th birthday, I was away at a conference in an unfamiliar hotel room, got up in the night, tripped and face planted into the dresser.
Now, I’ve been fortunate not to have had major injuries in my lifetime, sans a car accident in the 90s. So this was an eye opener. Except I hit my eye and am now black and blue across both eye sockets. It’s not a pretty sight, but it looks worse than it feels.
I’ve had to defend myself to all whom I’ve encountered over the past few days. “I’d hate to see what the other guy looks like…” is one common quip. Others are not fit for my P-G blog. It’s nice that people care, but it does get old explaining oneself. It’s like rehearsing an elevator speech where you try different approaches and see how the audience reacts.
I must say 68 doesn’t feel much different than 60. My parents still say to me they can’t believe their ages – now nearing 87 and 90. But the truth is, the body ages and the reflexes aren’t what they used to be. My exercise of choice is Club Pilates and pool aerobics. Never been a gym rat and don’t want to start now. But self care for each of us is important at any age.
In addition to physical health, we need to take care of our mental health. It is a big concern now as the world seems to be in a bit of a tailspin. I experience much more angst among friends and business associates than ever before. Will we get an AI kill switch before it becomes able to outsmart us and destroy humanity? Will we take control of Congress and finally start to put guardrails on this insane administration?
This is National Recovery Month promoting and supporting substance abuse treatment and mental health recovery. We have a large recovery community here. October is National Depression and Mental Health Screening Month. Just as we take care of our bodies, we need to do so with our minds.
