Despite the ongoing government shutdown, Joshua Tree National Park remains open and operational thanks to the continued efforts of the Joshua Tree National Park Association (JTNPA). Executive Director Jacqueline Guevara has issued a public update clarifying how the shutdown is affecting park services, staff, and visitors.
Unlike the 2019 shutdown, this time all five visitor centers are open during regular hours, staffed and ready to assist with questions, purchases, and trip planning. Rangers are present at entrance stations and campgrounds, offering public safety support and directions, though entrance fees are not being collected. Campgrounds remain open but are now operating on a first-come, first-served basis due to the cancellation of reservations through Recreation.gov.
Construction of the new West Entrance station is progressing without interruption, and JTNPAโs Education and Fundraising departments continue to run programs and Desert Institute classes as scheduled. Guevara emphasized the importance of recreating responsibly and following Leave No Trace principles during this period.
While acknowledging the challenges posed by the shutdown, JTNPA remains committed to its mission of supporting the park through donations, memberships, and community engagement. Guevara expressed deep gratitude for the parkโs visitors, partners, and donors, encouraging everyone to stay informed through social media and future updates.
