Gay Desert Guide Weekend Jun 5-7 2026
Brad Fuhr

Indio is In-da-house for Pride Month! We just got word that the City of Indio is a late entry into June Pride celebrations statewide next weekend. Small but mighty is the watchword as our Mitch Battersby posted on Facebook this week about small town celebrations.

Larger Pride celebrations with many years of history are facing financial issues as we have reported here recently. So it’s refreshing to see smaller communities organize to recognize that we are everywhere.

This weekend, our K-Gay Desert Guide team will venture to West Hollywood for WeHo Pride and the OUT Loud Music Festival with our partners at Visit Palm Springs.

Big city prides used to mean those who were in rural America traveled there to be able to be themselves and be in community with others in our LGBTQIA+ rainbow. Not today!

On Thursday, KGAY’s John Taylor did a shout out to the many small town Pride celebrations happening this June from Mitch’s post. CBS News (as it is gutted) reports that Pine City, MN, is recognized as the birthplace of rural Pride celebrations and has an historic marker erected to prove it.

Paul WIlkens, treasurer of East Central Minnesota Pride, was quoted in the report: “It really does help me out knowing that I live in a neighborhood that is accepting and understanding and appreciates me for who I am. Finding friendships out here, finding community out here, finding people that are like minded really helps. It really helps you become who you really want to be.”

But that celebration only began in 2005.

My hometown of Hastings, Michigan, just started a Pride celebration three years ago. I’ll be supporting it from afar with my dollars, and look forward to attending in the future. I always get reports from family and friends about what progress has been made from the days when I thought I was the only gay in the village!

Indio joins Cathedral City, Palm Springs, East Valley Pride and a rumoured Rancho Mirage event yet to be announced. There’s much progress in expanding our visibility beyond big cities, but much more to be done. Happy Pride Month! See you in WeHo?
