Palm Springs International Airport has entered a five-year partnership with Desert Arc, a local nonprofit that creates meaningful job opportunities for adults with disabilities. Approved by the Palm Springs City Council in September 2024, the collaboration brings Desert Arcโs landscape maintenance division on board to handle key services, including ground maintenance, landscaping, and trash removal, for the airportโs courtyard and surrounding areas.
Under this agreement, a dedicated crewโcomprising three individuals with disabilities and a job coachโwill work year-round, seven days a week. The $320,000 annual allocation supports labor and materials, such as flowers, soil, and mulch, and is fully self-funded by the airport, using no local taxpayer dollars. This initiative underscores the airportโs commitment to inclusivity, diversity, and community stewardship while enhancing daily operations and providing sustainable employment opportunities.
โThis partnership is a win for everyoneโhelping meet the airportโs operational needs while also supporting sustainable employment for people with disabilities,โ said Harry Barrett, Jr., Executive Director of Aviation at PSP. Palm Springs Mayor Ron deHarte echoed the sentiment, celebrating the initiative as an example of how to create meaningful employment while ensuring the airport remains a welcoming gateway to the city.
Desert Arcโs President and CEO, Richard Balocco, called the partnership a historic and monumental decision for the nonprofit, which has supported people with disabilities since its founding in Palm Springs in 1959. Councilmember Jeffrey Bernstein praised the program for its efficiency and benefit to both the community and airport maintenance, hailing it as a โwin-winโ scenario.
Through this collaboration, Desert Arc contributes to the City of Palm Springsโ broader vision of fostering an inclusive workforce while ensuring Palm Springs International Airport remains a clean, inviting space for travelers and residents alike.
