Plaza Theatre Interior

The Palm Springs Plaza Theatre has officially been added to the National Register of Historic Places, a milestone that affirms its cultural, architectural, and historical importance. The announcement, made by the Palm Springs Plaza Theatre Foundation, marks a triumphant moment for the beloved 1936 landmark, which recently reopened following an extensive restoration completed under the strict guidelines of the National Park Service. The designation, administered by the National Park Service at the U.S. Department of the Interior, recognizes historic sites across the country that are worthy of preservation and protection.

Designed by architect Harry J. Williams, the Plaza Theatre stands as a rare and beautifully preserved example of a 1930s Spanish Colonial Revival atmospheric theater. Its clay tile rooflines, arched fenestration, painted concrete walls, doubleโ€‘height auditorium, coved ceiling, and Spanishโ€‘themed interior details remain remarkably intact. The buildingโ€™s 15,110โ€‘squareโ€‘foot footprint has undergone minimal alteration since its construction, allowing it to retain full historic integrity and remain closely tied to Palm Springsโ€™ early commercial development. It is also the only known atmospheric theatre โ€” complete with starryโ€‘sky effects and stylized facades โ€” in the Coachella Valley.

The theatreโ€™s legacy is equally rich. For decades, it hosted starโ€‘studded charity events, variety shows, and live radio broadcasts featuring icons such as Jack Benny, Bob Hope, and Frank Sinatra. These performances helped shape the cultural fabric of Palm Springs and contributed to the nationโ€™s broader entertainment history.

Securing a place on the National Register was also a crucial step in obtaining Federal Historic Tax Credits, which will provide approximately $2.8 million to offset the City of Palm Springsโ€™ restoration costs. Judith Blanchard, a Foundation board member who helped lead the tax credit effort, emphasized the complexity and importance of the project. โ€œHistorically preserving, restoring, and updating this nearly 100โ€‘yearโ€‘old building was a complicated and expensive project,โ€ she said. โ€œWe are thrilled that our hard work has been recognized with this designation.โ€

The Plaza Theatre Foundation continues its mission to preserve and celebrate this historic venue. More information about the theatre and ongoing efforts can be found at PalmSpringsPlazaTheatre.com.
