Pride Month officially starts this Monday, June 1st. After our #Marilyn100 weekend, I have both a sense of civic pride and renewed sense of how important LGBTQ+ Pride celebrations continue to be.
I was away last week celebrating the milestone birthday of a good friend and fellow media maven Matt Skallerud. I have known him since my early days in Los Angeles and we collaborate to help businesses reach the LGBTQ+ market through his company, Pink Media.
He and I had plenty of time to talk about the state of affairs in our world. We both are early risers and found ourselves at the stern of the ship most mornings. The subject of Long Beach Pride was top of mind, as was the latest headline that Phoenix Pride filed for Chapter 11 protection.
Matt had recently written an extensive blog post, The Void Left by Corporate Retreat โ And Who’s Filling It. New York Pride’s celebration is facing a $750,000 deficit left by the pullback of corporate America over fears of political retribution, and boycotts.
Four of five of their platinun sponsors retreated. Mastercard, Target, Garnier, and Skyy Vodka have all pulled back; L’Orรฉalย is the only remaining Platinum sponsor from last year’s lineup. Some have just opted to go silent and not have their names or logos associated with the event.
So as we mark just five months until Palm Springs Pride, I’m concerned about how funding is going to go for our beloved weekend. We know there was a deficit last year, and given the headlines, it’s unlikely that corporate America will suddenly “get religion” and open their checkbooks.
That leaves all of us — both businesses and individuals — to fill in the gap. How? Fundraising events like Big Gay BBQ and Marilyn 100 help. And they extend our reach into the greater community to bring visibility at a time when our government wants us back in the closet.
Let’s continue to build up and support each other – especially online. Negative posts and comments do nothing but give you a little ego boost when others pile on. It’s not necessary. Be happy that many of us in the Coachella Valley are stepping up to help during these trying times. And find ways to provide financial support as we prepare for our Pride.
Happy Pride Month (officially) and may we have a 40th Palm Springs Pride for the record books come November!
P.S. Don’t forget to vote!
