The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens is excited to announce that the popular Lorikeets: Winged Wonders aviary, camel rides and the Total Adventure Package have returned for another season.
Â
Making an encore appearance, The Living Desert welcomes back the Lorikeets: Winged Wonders. More than 50 lorikeets and lories fly freely around the 2,500 square-foot habitat that features numerous perches, trees and bushes. The aviary allows for the birds to fly freely, while guests observe their natural behaviors and interactions, as well as have the opportunity to feed the birds with a cup of nectar. Lorikeets and lories are unique members of the parrot family, native to Australia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea that are adapted to feeding on the nectar and pollen of trees.
Â
The aviary is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through April 28, 2019. Aviary entrance fee is $2 members; $3 non-members and includes all-day access. Guests are invited to feed the lorikeets with cups of nectar that will be available for purchase for $3 per feeding cup.
Â
While camels are home at The Living Desert throughout the year, three additional dromedary camels join the herd as one of the zoo’s biggest attractions. These camels have a single hump that stores food and their lips are thickened to allow for consumption of thorny plants. These legendary animals give a glimpse into the nomadic lifestyle.
Â
Camel rides are offered daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through April 28, 2019. Riders must be at least three years old. The cost is $6 per person.
Â
The Total Adventure Package allows guests to experience the Zoo’s main attractions for one low price including unlimited giraffe feedings, lorikeet admission and feedings, camel and carousel rides. The cost is $18 per person for members and $20 per non-member.
Â
All proceeds from these activities support The Living Desert’s animal care, conservation, and education programs.
Â
The Living Desert is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit LivingDesert.org or call (760) 346-5694.
