I Do I Do

Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt didn’t create a long list of Broadway shows, but most of the shows they wrote did make a lasting impression on those who saw them.  Their fame began Off-Broadway with “The Fantasticks” which went on to have a run of over 40 years; the longest of any American musical.  They wrote “110 In The Shade,” a musical adaptation of “The Rainmaker” and then came Robert Preston and Mary Martin in the wonderful 2 person musical, “I Do, I Do.”  The show chronicles the life of a couple from their wedding day into their twilight years.  It has a brilliant score including the lyrical “My Cup Runneth Over” which became a hit single for Ed Ames. The musical was instantly relatable as it touched on many of the commonalities experienced while married or in a committed relationship, making the show a big hit.

I Do I Do Revolution Stage Co

So, thanks to the Revolution Stage Company, this gem of a musical is here in Palm Springs.  It’s directed by Roger Welch and stars Francesca Amari and Gary Powers. The musical is based on the play “The Fourposter” and so the one set, designed by Miguel Lauro, is appropriately their bedroom, dominated by the couple’s bed.

The score is as moving, funny and wonderful as ever.  Vocally, Ms. Amari gives a beautiful and touching rendition of “What Is a Woman?” and is both funny and brassy as she cuts loose with “Flaming Agnes.” Ms. Amari and Mr. Powers seem to have a good rapport which can only continue to develop better onstage chemistry with every performance.

“I Do, I Do” is playing at the Revolution Stage Company in Palm Springs through October 27, 2024.  For tickets or further information visit their website at Revolutionstagecompany.com
