Come From Away is the musical about the flights diverted on September 11th to a small town in Newfoundland. It shows the humanity of people caring for each other in a dreadful time.
I had my “Come From Away” experience flying home from Michigan over the weekend. A two-hour flight from GRR to DEN turned into one of those nightmare travel experiences.
While United Airlines bears the brunt or responsibility for the bulk of our delays, I did finally get home 24 hours later. But my experience shows that there are still good and caring people in the world. I learned that there is a place (and airport) named Montrose, Colorado. It services the Telluride ski resorts, doesn’t have a control tower, nor many motel rooms on a holiday weekend.
Our diversion due to storms turned into an overnight on the floor of the airport for 200 + people. Maybe it’s the good-natured Midwestern stock that was mostly on the flight, but there were no fits of rage by passengers to the United ground team. There was much exasperation as you can imagine. We couldn’t even leave – there was no TSA on duty.
But when it was determined we were stuck, they ordered dozens of pizzas for us and tried to help in any way they could. They even counseled us on getting better compensation from the airline. (Something I’m sure they would deny…) Even the replacement flight attendants were empathetic and got us coffee while taxiing to the runway to get back to Denver the next morning.
I’ll likely never see any of those people again, but in a small way we bonded for a brief period with no thought of political or social divides. Just people helping people. The way it should be.
