There’s one Canadian export for which Donald Trump cannot impose a tariff: Deven Green. She and her British import husband, Ned Douglas, were recognized Saturday at Gertie’s by the City of Palm Springs which honored them with a “Deven Green and Handsome Ned Day” proclamation.
When they were set to perform at Gertie’s inside Living Out on Saturday, there was much social media chatter about their big announcement. Were they leaving PS? Was Deven pregnant? Would she run for mayor of Palm Springs? (Yes, all were rumoured!). Turns out, Larry Dean Harris, who also champions them as I do, had gotten them the proclamation from city hall.
Deven and Ned became friends after they came in to the KGAY studios for our holiday show with John Taylor a number of years ago. It was the same day that New York Times reporter Erik Piepenburg was interviewing us for a feature article. That day, they performed The 12 Days of Christmas in under two minutes!
So we’re in a trade war with the country whose tourists we hold so dear — Canada. Just as I thought we might see Canadians want to come back to Greater Palm Springs this season, the US starts another battle.
Canada is our primary international market, contributing billions annually to lodging, dining, and entertainment. Following political rhetoric and previous tariff disputes, Canadian travel to the U.S. dropped roughly 25%. Locally, we’ve felt the impact directly. Although early summer 2026 saw a slight normalization in border crossings, the collapse of August trade talks and imposition of steep 50% tariffs have reignited consumer boycotts and “staycation” sentiment in Canada.
Thank Mrs. Betty Bower’s ‘god’ that the duo of Deven and Ned have made Palm Springs their home and they have no plans to boycott or stop performing. Quite the opposite.
Each Monday, you can see them host the most fun Bingo night you’ll ever experience at Agua Caliente Casino’s Cascade Lounge. They keep a dizzying schedule especially during season with unique shows that include original songs and some parodies that always leave me laughing.
We have many local treasures. But these two are especially “honor-worthy”. If you haven’t seen them perform, there will be plenty of opportunities to do so this Fall. Our LGBTQ+ community needs more allies like Deven and Ned! And they are tariff-proof!
