Gay Desert Guide Week of Feb 9 2026
Brad Fuhr

She’s the First Lady of Modernism and shared the viewfinder of Slim Aaron’s camera with Marilyn Monroe.
There’s a paint color named after her. She’s my neighbor in the Canyon Corridor, still sells real estate and has a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars.

Give up? It’s Nelda Linsk, a Palm Springs fixture since her yellow dress famously graced a photo shoot at the Kaufmann house. In 2015, Linsk returned to recreate the iconic image during Palm Springs Modernism Week for its 45th anniversary. In a New York Times interview, Linsk humorously claimed credit for the photo’s fame, saying, “Slim, it’s because I’m in it.”

The Palm Springs Walk of Stars will re-dedicate her star to mark the start of Modernism Week Thursday at 11 am. That famous photo harkens back to a time when cocktails around the pool were aspirational to middle America. Our two-weekend celebration of architecture and design will usher in visitors from all over the world.

Then there’s the news about Palm Springs Pride sponsoring a Marilyn Monroe 100th birthday tribute happening May 29-June. The goal is to set an official Guinness World Record™ for the largest gathering of people dressed as Marilyn Monroe. I see Marilyn 100 as an opportunity for our drag community to all dress as Marilyn Monroe. They are aiming for 500 participants, shattering the current record of 254.

Want to join in? You could always test out your look at the Red Dress/Dress Red Party on March 21st. After this weekend’s “Say YAAS to the Dress” donation event over the weekend, you can go shopping for your Marilyn look-alike on the 21st. Can you image dozens Marilyn’s in red dresses for the celebration?

I think I’ll stay on the sidelines. I’m told my matronly look when dressing in drag scares children and causes cats to arch their backs. I’ll probably still buy the Marilyn Icon Kit to support the event, but it’s better that I wear my “press” visor rather than a red — or yellow — dress.
