Live Aid turns 40 this weekend. Freddie Mercury and Elton John were just two of many icons who hit the stages at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia and Wembley in London.
A four-part documentary debuts on CNN this weekend, titled “Live Aid: When Rock ‘n’ Roll Took on the World”. If you remember, Bob Geldof created the event to help those who were starving and living in poverty in Ethiopia. It followed on the heels of ‘A Band Aid” and the song “Do They Know it’s Christmas” in 1984 and was helped launch USA for Africa (remember “We Are the World”?)
To this day, I have a 45 RPM (7 inch records on vinyl) of a version of “We Are the World” that was done for local charities in Rockford, Illinois. I was the program director of a Top 40 station, WZOK, and with our sister station WROK, we created a version of the song with local artists and local lyrics. I came across the record recently and threw it on the turntable some 40 years later. Our version raised funds for those in our community who were in need. It’s a tribute to the power of music to bring awareness and do good.
I wonder who will come to our aid in the coming years? Should we fall into the dystopian future that’s predicted, let’s hope another country’s creatives will band together and raise money to help us. Better yet, let’s just get out the vote in the next election and change the country the way our forefathers intended.
