Animal Samaritans has announced a new initiative to provide free spay and neuter services to pet owners across the Coachella Valley, thanks to a generous $100,000 anonymous donation. The program will roll out city by city, aiming to combat pet overpopulation and promote animal welfare.

The free spay and neuter campaign began in Cathedral City in June, where Animal Samaritans staff distributed vouchers at Esperanza Park and the Cathedral City Senior Center. This initial phase successfully provided surgeries for numerous dogs and cats, marking a positive start to the program.

The next city to benefit from this initiative will be Desert Hot Springs. Starting in July, residents of Desert Hot Springs can obtain vouchers on a first-come, first-served basis at City Hall on Palm Drive. To qualify, residents must present a photo ID and proof of Desert Hot Springs residency. Each voucher includes a free spay or neuter procedure, post-operative pain medication, and a pet e-collar.

Valerie Kattz, Animal Samaritans Marketing and PR Specialist, emphasized the program’s importance, stating, “This is about health, compassion, and prevention. Spaying and neutering reduces suffering, prevents unwanted litters, helps control pet overpopulation, and reduces euthanasia in high-risk shelters.”

Animal Samaritans has a long history of promoting animal health, having started as a spay/neuter clinic in 1978. Today, the organization operates two full-service veterinary clinics in Indio and Thousand Palms, offering a comprehensive range of services including urgent care, oncology, cardiology, and internal medicine. They also manage a No Kill shelter in Thousand Palms.

Recognized as the Best Veterinary Clinic in the Desert for two consecutive years, Animal Samaritans plans to continue this vital city-by-city effort throughout 2025.
