The L-Fund and The LGBTQ Community Center of the Desert have announced a major milestone for lesbian-focused support services in the Coachella Valley. In a move designed to expand resources, strengthen long-term stability, and deepen community impact, the two organizations will officially merge on July 1, 2026.
The L-Fund, long recognized for its mission to uplift cis, trans, and queer-identifying lesbians in times of need, will bring its established programs and leadership team into The Centerโs organizational structure. This transition ensures that the fundโs emergency financial assistance, educational support, and community-building initiatives will continue to grow with enhanced capacity.
Leadership continuity is central to the merger. Co-chairs Mei Ling Tom and Robbin Burr will join The Centerโs board in January, helping guide the integration and future direction of The L-Fundโs work. Dr. Karyl E. Ketchum, a California State University Professor of Gender and Sexuality Studies and a longtime L-Fund board member, will step into the role of Director of The L-Fund at The Center.
โWe are entering a new era,โ said Tom. โFor years, The L-Fund has been driven by passion to uplift cis, trans, and queer-identifying lesbians in need. Now, by merging with The Center, we are amplifying that mission with greater capacity, stability, and a renewed vision.โ
Don Zuidema, chair of The Centerโs Board of Directors, echoed the enthusiasm. โBy uniting The LGBTQ Community Center of the Desert and The L-Fund, we strengthen a shared mission rooted in support, equity, and resilience for our entire community. Together, our combined reach and resources ensure that every person has access to the advocacy, care, and opportunity they deserve.โ
Community response has been overwhelmingly positive. Founding members of The L-Fund gathered at town halls throughout the fall to celebrate the merger and discuss the expanded opportunities it will bring. The partnership marks a significant step toward building a stronger, more inclusive future for lesbian-identifying individuals across the region.
With new leadership, expanded resources, and a unified mission, The L-Fundโs next chapter at The Center promises deeper impact and broader reach for years to come.
