“Mariah Hanson always had a knack for throwing parties. So in 1991, she decided to put together a queer celebration, known as The Dinah, in Palm Springs, California, during a women’s golf tournament happening that same weekend.
The inaugural event took place at the Palm Springs Art Museum, with the weekend eventually evolving to a five-day festival described as “lesbian spring break” by The New York Times and “world’s biggest lesbian social whirl” by the Los Angeles Times.
A “love fest,” as described to TODAY.com by founder and producer Hanson, The Dinah is a “validation” of the LBGTQ+ community “and our need and right to express our lives in a way that reflects incredible unity and joy…”
