“Mariah Hanson always had a knack for throwing parties. So in 1991, she decided to put together a queer celebration, known as The Dinah, in Palm Springs, California, during a womenโ€™s golf tournament happening that same weekend.

The inaugural event took place at the Palm Springs Art Museum, with the weekend eventually evolving to a five-day festival described as โ€œlesbian spring breakโ€ by The New York Times and โ€œworldโ€™s biggest lesbian social whirlโ€ by the Los Angeles Times.

A โ€œlove fest,โ€ as described to TODAY.com by founder and producer Hanson, The Dinah is a โ€œvalidationโ€ of the LBGTQ+ community โ€œand our need and right to express our lives in a way that reflects incredible unity and joy…โ€
