John Swayne McDonald, aged 93, passed peacefully on the evening ofย Februaryย 22, 2026. Born on September 15, 1932 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Scottish immigrants John Swayne McDonald Sr. and Jessica Petrie. Johnโ€™s life was marked by a spirit of resilience, innovation, and deep compassion for others.

After his service in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, John used the GI Bill and graduated from UCLA. ย John climbed the corporate ladder in the insurance industry before pivoting to a career that would shape his legacy. While working at a consulting firm, John met Dr. Walterย Mullikin, with whom he co-founded Mullikin Medical Centers and Pioneer Hospital. Together, they built a multi-state healthcare organization that became the second largest provider on the West Coast.

Johnโ€™s leadership style was revolutionaryโ€”he introduced a concept that allowed employees to invest in the company, providing them with a stake in its success. ย In 1982, John met the love of his life and partner of many years, Rob Wright. After taking the company public, John and Rob retired in 1995 and moved to Beaver Creek, Colorado, to enjoy a well-deserved rest. ย He loved the summers, learned to ski to appreciate the winters and traveled the world.

John and Rob were dedicated supporters of LGBTQ+ causes and made significant contributions to organizations such as the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center, the Williams Institute at UCLA Law School, Lambda Legal, The LGBTQ+ Center of the Desert. and to the annual Bravo Vail Valley Summer Concert Series.

While John was a visionary in business, he was even more remarkable for his generosity, humility, and commitment to making the world a better place. He leaves behind a lasting legacy of innovation, advocacy, and love for his family, friends, and the many lives he touched throughout his journey.

John is survived by Rob, his devoted husband and life companion. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no public memorial service.ย ย John will be laid to rest at Pierce Brothers Westwood Memorial Park in Westwood, California.
