Palm Springs Plaza Theatre Exceeds Expectations: A Landmark First 90 Days
The historic heart of downtown Palm Springs is beating stronger than ever. The Board of Directors of the Palm Springs Plaza Theatre Foundation has released a glowing operational report marking the theatre’s first 90 days, revealing that the venue has not only met but significantly surpassed its inaugural goals.
With a staggering 94 events hosted in just 90 days, the theatre has become a powerhouse of cultural activity and a primary driver for the local economy.
Economic Impact Surpassing Projections
One of the most notable successes is the theatre’s role as an economic engine. While original models predicted a 50/50 split between local and out-of-town guests, current data shows that 66% of attendees are traveling from outside the Palm Springs Metro Area.
“This exceeds our projections for economic development,” said Foundation President J.R. Roberts. “The Plaza Theatre is projected to generate $40 million in annual economic impact with an estimated $4 million annual tax benefit to Palm Springs.” Local hospitality partners, including Hotel Zoso and the Thompson Hotel, are already reporting sold-out weekends directly tied to the theatreโs programming.
A Diverse Stage for World-Class Talent
Under the management of Oak View Group, the theatre has curated an incredibly diverse lineup. From the breathtaking opening night with Cynthia Erivo to comedy sets by Lily Tomlin, Fortune Feimster, and Matteo Lane, the venue has offered something for everyone. Music legends like Don McLean, Mickey Dolenz, and Joss Stone have graced the stage, alongside Broadway stars such as Lucie Arnaz and Jane Lynch.
The theatre also honored its roots with a special screening of Camille, the very film that opened the doors of the Plaza back on December 12, 1936.
A Home for the Arts and Nonprofits
True to its mission, the Plaza Theatre has become a sanctuary for local nonprofit organizations. The foundation has established several key residencies:
- Inaugural Resident Artists: Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus
- Ensemble-in-Residence: Modern Men
- Symphony in Residence: Palm Springs Symphony
The theatre also serves as a recurring partner for major regional events like the Palm Springs International Film Festival and Modernism Week, ensuring it remains a year-round hub for the community.
Looking Ahead: Community and Philanthropy
The Foundation is launching a new pilot program to distribute tickets to partner charities, ensuring the arts remain accessible to all. To sustain this momentum, the Foundation continues to invite community support through memberships and its prestigious “Icons of the Desert Theatre Society.”
As City Councilmember Jeffrey Bernstein noted, “The theatreโs economic impact is even greater than projected, and this will increase as the Theatre continues to provide year-round programming, even through the summer.”
