Some Kind of Wonderful

After making a splash at over 35 film festivals and racking up more than a dozen awards, the original pilot of the LGBTQ+ series Some Kind of Wonderful proved there’s a hunger for heartfelt, funny, and fiercely queer storytelling—and it all began right here in Palm Springs.

Now, local filmmaker and longtime creative force Ricky Reidling is back and ready to take things to the next level. Through his production company, Open Palm Productions, he’s launched a Wefunder campaign to fund a brand-new pilot and roll into a full first season—with Palm Springs once again serving as the stunning and soulful backdrop.

“I don’t just want Palm Springs as a location—I want it to be a character,” says Reidling. “This city has its own pulse, personality, and fierce charm. I want to celebrate that with every frame.”

🎥 What’s Some Kind of Wonderful All About?

Set against the breezy, sun-soaked backdrop of Palm Springs, Some Kind of Wonderful follows the lives of four close-knit LGBTQ+ friends navigating love, loss, aging, and reinvention with heart and humor. Think gay Sex and the City with a desert twist—complete with martini lunches, sharp one-liners, and emotional depth.

The project already has some incredible names attached—industry veterans and rising talent alike, both in front of and behind the camera. But at its core, Some Kind of Wonderful is deeply personal. Beyond the laughs and drama, it’s a love letter to the queer community and to the city that’s become Reidling’s creative home.

This isn’t his first time in the spotlight—Ricky previously created the popular gay cable series BoysTown and the feature film Heels. But this? This is the project that ties it all together.

💸 Invest in More Than a TV Series

The Wefunder campaign is raising funds to shoot a reimagined pilot and move forward with a full season. While a few generous friends have already stepped up to invest, the campaign still needs fuel to reach its goal.

And let’s be clear—this isn’t a donation. It’s an investment opportunity.

Through Wefunder, supporters can invest as little as $100 and share in the potential upside of a successful series. More importantly, they become part of something rooted in community, creativity, and Palm Springs pride.

“You’re not just investing in a series,” says Reidling. “You’re investing in this city. I want to showcase Palm Springs to the world—not just as a beautiful place, but as a creative hub, a safe space, and a true character in its own right.”

🏳️‍🌈 Palm Springs: The Real Star of the Show

From the design to the people, the desert energy, and the queer history—Palm Springs is woven into every frame of Some Kind of Wonderful. The new pilot and season will feature local talent, businesses, and landmarks, all through the lens of inclusive storytelling.

“This show is for the people who live here, love here, and thrive here,” says Reidling. “Whether you’re a full-time resident, a snowbird, or someone who fell in love with Palm Springs just once—I want you to see yourself in these stories.”
