PSP Master Plan Hybrid Alternative Rendering

The Palm Springs City Council took a major step towards modernizing Palm Springs International Airport (PSP) on January 23rd, unanimously approving the Airport Master Plan’s conceptual development plan. This includes the selection of a hybrid Rental Car Center (RCC), marking a key phase in the airport’s evolution.

The approved hybrid RCC model prioritizes passenger experience with a single-story structure and two underground levels north of the terminal, near baggage claim. This design allows for consolidated rental car operations while maintaining walkability and the airport’s iconic mid-century modern aesthetic. A second structure south of Kirk Douglas Way could be added later to accommodate future demand.

What’s Next?

While the Master Plan outlines the airport’s future development, it does not include specific designs or funding plans. The next step involves an environmental analysis (CEQA) to assess potential impacts, anticipated to take 12-18 months. Following CEQA approval, detailed design, financial analysis, and further stakeholder engagement will take place.

Construction on the first phase, including seven new gates, an expanded baggage claim, the RCC, and a Federal Inspection Station (FIS) to enable international travel, could commence as early as 2027-2028.

Public Engagement Remains Key

Public participation is crucial throughout the process. The community will have opportunities to provide feedback on the design and implementation of the proposed projects. This collaborative approach ensures the airport’s growth aligns with the values and needs of the Coachella Valley.

Highlights of the Hybrid RCC Alternative:

  • Convenience: Located near the terminal, it maintains the airport’s passenger-friendly reputation.
  • Scalability: The phased approach allows for flexibility to accommodate future demand.
  • Architectural Integrity: The design will respect PSP’s iconic mid-century modern architecture.

A Vision for the Future

Palm Springs International Airport, serving over 3.2 million passengers annually, is a vital economic driver for the region. Projections estimate passenger numbers could double by 2042, making proactive planning essential.

The Master Plan has been developed through extensive public engagement, including stakeholder meetings, public open houses, and input from the Airport Commission. This collaborative process ensures that PSP’s growth reflects the community’s vision for the future.

Looking Ahead

The Airport Master Plan represents a commitment to building a sustainable, forward-thinking airport that balances modern infrastructure with iconic design, while prioritizing passenger convenience, regional connectivity, and the unique character of Palm Springs.
