Palm Springs International Airport (PSP) is proud to announce it has been awarded a $6 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to upgrade its outbound baggage handling system and expand the area housing this critical infrastructure, ensuring efficient processing as PSP continues to welcome record numbers of passengers.
This competitive grant, awarded through the Airport Terminals Program and funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, is part of a $970 million initiative to improve terminal infrastructure at airports across the country. PSP’s proposal will support upgrades to the airport’s outbound baggage system and an expansion of that part of the terminal to accommodate the growing volume of luggage associated with PSP’s recent passenger growth.
“After two consecutive years of record passenger numbers at PSP, this funding is vital to our mission to deliver a smooth and efficient travel experience for our guests,” said Harry Barrett, Executive Director of Palm Springs International Airport. “This grant from the FAA allows us to expand our outbound baggage area to meet current and future demand, supporting our airport’s growth and our community’s needs.”
The $6 million grant must be utilized within four years, with PSP targeting a construction start date in late 2025. The funding is currently pending formal acceptance by the Palm Springs City Council, after which the airport will initiate the planning and development phases.
This award aligns with the FAA’s broader goal to enhance airport infrastructure and efficiency nationwide. The investment in PSP will not only enhance baggage processing capabilities but also contribute to the airport’s sustainability and energy efficiency goals.
