1946 Film

The Palm Springs Cultural Center continues its Cinema Diverse Showcase Series with the new documentary, 1946: The Mistranslation that Shifted Culture (1946). The film, which debuted this year in Palm Springs at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, will have a one week theatrical run at the Palm Springs Cultural Center as part of the new series.

1946 chronicles the discovery of never-before-seen archives at Yale University which unveil astonishing new revelations, and cast significant doubt on any biblical basis for LGBTQIA+ prejudice. Featuring commentary from prominent scholars as well as opposing pastors, and including the personal stories of the filmโ€™s creators, and original music by Grammy winning artist Mary Lambert, 1946 is at once challenging, enlightening, and inspiring.

While other documentaries have been successful in their attempt to treat the symptom of homophobia in the church, 1946 is working to diagnose and treat the disease – Biblical Literalism and gross errors in biblical translation.

The filmโ€™s Director, Sharon โ€œRockyโ€ Roggio said about the film, โ€œBiblical literalism has led to the marginalization of innumerable human beings, not just within the gay community. But most families love each other. And where there is love there is a willingness to learn. Where there is love, there is hope.โ€

โ€œWe are so excited to be able to include 1946 in our Cinema Diverse Showcase,” said Michael C. Green, Executive Director of the Palm Springs Cultural Center & Artistic Director of Cinema Diverse: The Palm Springs LGBTQ+ Film Festival. โ€œConservative Christians continue to dehumanize gay people based on biblical texts – texts that are being quoted out of context and based on mistranslations. 1946 shines a light on what the words that were mistranslated actually meant to the people who wrote the text.โ€
