The LGBTQ+ History & Archives of the Desert, in partnership with Strait Knot Productions, is pleased to announce it will be sponsoring the 2022 acclaimed documentary film, Nelly & Nadine, at Cinema Diverse: The Palm Springs LGBTQ Film Festival, on Saturday, September 30.
Picked as One of the Five ‘must see’ films at the Festival by The Desert Sun, tickets are selling fast.
On Christmas Eve, 1944, Belgian prisoner and opera singer Nelly Mousset-Vos is asked to sing Christmas carols in one of the barracks at the Ravensbrück concentration camp. After she meets Nadine Hwang, the pair begin a secret relationship. They were separated, but after the war, Nelly and Nadine moved together to Venezuela, and lived as a couple until Nadine’s death.
An astonishing love story directed by Magnus Gertten, Nadine is first identified in newsreel footage of refugees arriving in Sweden after the liberation of the camps. This footage alone would be noteworthy; but it’s equally remarkable that Nelly and Nadine’s was preserved and now shared by her granddaughter Sylvie Bianchi. The film is moving for the intimacy it depicts, an archive as unlikely as the love story itself, and a glimpse into the life of these women who love other women.
Nelly & Nadine will be shown during the second weekend of the festival on Saturday, September 30, at 2:30 pm, at the Palm Springs Cultural Center, 2300 East Baristo Road, Palm Springs.
