Modernism Week has teamed up with acclaimed design expert and Emmy-nominated host of Netflix’s Queer Eye Bobby Berk to offer Modernism Week Showcase Home: Casa Tierra during Modernism Week – May, running May 12-15, 2022. The event highlights midcentury modern architecture, art, interior and landscape design, and vintage culture in the Palm Springs area of Southern California. Tickets are on sale now at modernismweek.com. A portion of ticket proceeds benefit Modernism Week (a non-profit organization) and other local preservation, neighborhood, and community groups. Casa Tierra tours are available on May 12-15 from 10 – 4 p.m. Tickets are $55 and must be purchased in advance. No tickets will be available at the door.
Berk’s project, Casa Tierra, is an idyllic desert modern escape located in Palm Desert, just minutes away from Palm Springs. Offered for the first-time during Modernism Week – May, this hidden gem of an estate, originally built in 1950, offers the perfect oasis to get away from it all. Working with local designer and Hotelement founder Paula Oblen to reimagine the more than 5,000 square feet of living space with an eye toward hospitality, Berk and Oblen transformed this unique Spanish-style property into a world-class destination, with modern touches and an emphasis of Berk’s unique design style throughout. The design scheme reflects the colors and textures of the desert landscape and seamlessly integrates with the outdoors and breathtaking hillside setting. Home Tour guests will be shuttled to the property from a nearby location due to private roads.
“It is an honor to participate in Modernism Week – May,” said Berk. “I have had a love for Modernism Week since 2017 when I first had a design project featured during the event. Now that I am venturing into my own property for Modernism Week, it was only fitting to take on this oasis. When I first visited Casa Tierra in the exclusive Cahuilla Hills neighborhood of south Palm Desert, I knew I wanted to transform this special compound into a chic desert modern getaway. It’s the perfect kind of project to share with Modernism Week because of its scale and design opportunities. This project has been a labor of love. The novelty of reimagining a property is a dream come true and alongside Modernism Week is a match made in heaven. To share this hidden gem in Palm Desert and create Case Tierra to be an escape for anyone to explore and stay, is a designer and guest haven.”
Casa Tierra offers breathtaking panoramic views from its two and a half-acre hillside setting. The property’s buildings feature charming balconies, a spacious pool and hot tub, and many private, covered seating areas. Indoors, Bobby’s aspirational yet attainable style is on display throughout the five bedroom/five and a half bathroom main house as well as the two casitas that include their own kitchens and bathrooms.
“The original buildings are Spanish-Mediterranean style, which I have approached with a functional and minimalist perspective, blending textures and patterns inspired by the desert into the overall setting,” continued Berk. “Casa Tierra is a special project for me and I look forward to sharing the magic I see in it with those who attend Modernism Week – May.”
“We are so excited to partner with Bobby on this exciting design project during Modernism Week – May,” said Lisa Vossler Smith, Modernism Week Executive Director. “Modernism Week is known for offering exclusive tours of stunning properties not generally open to the public. We know that this year’s participants will be thrilled to tour this magnificent compound and see first-hand Bobby’s unique design style.”
