Modernism Week, the annual festival thatย highlights midcentury modern architecture, art, interior and landscape design,ย and vintage culture inย the Palm Springs area of Southern California, will offerย more than 85 informative and entertaining talks, panel discussions and otherย presentations at various locations during the 11-dayย event that runs Februaryย 15-25, 2018. A distinguished array of speakers โ all leaders in their fields โย will share their knowledge and insights with Modernism Week audiences each dayย ofย the event. Tickets range from $10 โ 45 for talks and panels. Some of theย talks include tours of related buildings and are priced at $50 or more. Theย Modernism Week Keynote Presentation is โMartyn Lawrence Bullard and Palmย Springs: A Modernist Paradiseโ on February 17, 2018. Bullard is Palm Springsโย best-known designerย of this century and is consistently named as a top designerย in many publications including Architectural Digest, Elle Dรฉcor and theย Hollywood Reporter. He has also hosted and appearedย on television programs inย his native UK as well as in the United States. Through his eponymous designย firm in Los Angeles, Bullardโs reach extends beyond his own lines of furniture,ย textiles and accessories in the creation of dramatic collections for luxuryย brands both domestically and internationally. Appearing as Modernism Weekโsย Keynote Speaker, Bullard willย share what it is like to design homes for hisย celebrity clientele including the Kardashians, Cher and Tommy Hilfiger.ย Attendees will learn more about how Bullard is continually inspired byย Palmย Springs and how he went about the renovation of Villa Grigio, his 1963 Movieย Colony hideaway by architect James McNaughton. The Keynote Presentation will beย at the Richardsย Center for the Arts (at the Palm Springs High School at 2248ย Ramon Road). Immediately following the Keynote Presentation, Bullard will joinย a panel discussion with photographer andย author Tim Street-Porter and additionalย designers whose work is highlighted inย Palm Springs: A Modernistย Paradise. Bullardโs residence Graces the cover of the book. Mayer Rus,ย writer,ย editor and contributor to Architectural Digest will moderate and Trinaย Turk, noted fashion designer who wrote the foreword of the book, will emceeย this event. The Keynote Address startsย at 3 PM and tickets are $20 forย General Admission, $35 for Preferred Seating or $90 for Preferred Seating and aย copy of the book.
This year, Modernismย Week will offer โHollywood Revisited: A Glamorous Musical Theater Extravaganza.โย This unique event celebrates many of the great Hollywood films of the 1940s toย the 60s, a period of time in Hollywood so closely associated with Palm Springs.ย Acclaimed vocalists sing and dance to movie-related music while wearing theย original costumes of theย films. Greg Schreiner, one of the most well knownย collectors of classic movie costumes and a concert pianist, provides theย musical accompaniment and entertaining anecdotes about theย designer, the movieย and the scene, while on screen, the costumes and the stars wearing them areย shown as originally seen by moviegoers. This must-see event happens February 22ย atย 6 PM and tickets are $50 – $65.ย

Jenniferย Dunlop Fletcher and Joseph Becker will discuss the conception and influences ofย The Sea Ranch, an architecturally and culturally significant residential developmentย on theย coast of California, north of San Francisco. Participating with themย will be the renowned graphic artist, Barbara Stauffacher Solomon, who early inย her 61-year career, created theย groundbreaking design of the ramโs head logo,ย graphic identity, and supergraphics at The Sea Ranch.
โRuthย Adler Schnee: A Search for Perfection,โ 1 PM, $20
Ruth Adlerย Schnee is one of the pioneers of midcentury modern design. She was among theย first women hired in the design office of Raymond Loewy (1945) and received aย scholarshipย to the Cranbrook Academy of Art (1946). Inspired by her winningย design for the Chicago Tribune competition, โBetter Homes for Better Livingโย (1947), she launched a career designingย and silkscreening abstract shapes ontoย textiles. Her bold, colorful designs demonstrate a uniquely personal synthesisย of prevailing modernist trends, from streamlining to biomorphicย modern, mergingย aesthetic pleasure with intellectual provocation. Over the course of herย 70-year career, she had collaborations with midcentury masters Eero Saarinen,ย Minoruย Yamasaki, and Frank Lloyd Wright and garnered numerous awards.
โThenย & Now, Designing Women at General Motors,โ 2:30 PM, $20
Thisย insiders view by Susan Skarsgard, Design Manager at GM Design Archive &ย Special Collections, captures the rich history of the trailblazing womenย designers from the 1940s to theย present, with a largely untold and surprisingย story that highlights the critical role women have played in automotive andย industrial design at General Motors. This story will be presentedย with a linkย to GMโs design history and a personal perspective on how Skarsgardโs own careerย path has been informed and influenced by this profound story.
โJustย Add Sunshine: The Extraordinary Career of Gere Kavanaugh,โ 4 PM, $20
To roundย out this series of presentations, Modernism Week welcomes one of the designย worldโs legendary women, Gere Kavanaugh. Her 60-year career has extensivelyย influenced theย design industry, particularly the fields of textiles, furniture,ย interior design, exhibitions, ceramics and graphics. Many of her groundbreakingย designsโcharacterized by bold color, sharpย lines and rich texturesโare nowย commonplace, such as the square market umbrella. Kavanaughโs work can be foundย in galleries, landmarks, museums and books across the world andย has developedย projects for corporate clients including Pepsi, Neutrogena and Warner Brothers,ย and a line of dinnerware for CB2.
The conceptย of influential women in design continues with โSecrets, Lies and Wallpaper: Theย Life and Designs of Florence Broadhurstโ on February 22 at 10:30 AM.ย Participants will joinย interior designer and design educator Annalisa Capurro,ย aka Ms. Modernism, to hear the extraordinary story of flamboyant Australianย midcentury designer and entrepreneur Florenceย Broadhurst, a wallpaper designer,ย who established a luxury, hand-printed wallpaper business in Sydney in 1959 at ageย 60. Known for her bold, oversized patterns and vivid colorย combinations, herย designs were exported internationally. Always innovative, Broadhurst created aย technique for printing onto metallic surfaces and developed a practical,ย washable vinyl.ย Today Broadhurstโs designs grace public and private interiorsย worldwide and feature in collaborations with companies such as Qantas and Kate Spadeย NY. Recognized by Timeย Magazine as one of the most influential post-warย designers, Florence Broadhurst leaves a legacy as bold and colorful as herย extraordinary life. Architectย Paul Revere Williams will be honored in several ways during Modernism Week. Onย Friday, February 16 the public is invited to attend a special dedication on theย Palm Springsย Walk of Stars for Paul R. Williams, one of the key architectsย (along with A. Quincy Jones and Donald Wexler) responsible for the iconic Townย and Country Center in Palm Springs. Theย star ceremony will be held at 2 PM atย the Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture and Design Center, Edwards Harrisย Pavilion at 300 S. Palm Canyon Drive.
Inย addition, Modernism Week with feature two talks about Williams and hisย influence in midcentury modern architecture.
โPaulย Revere Williams: Architect to the Starsโฆand Everyone Else,โ February 16, 9AM,ย $12
Paul Revereย Williams is an important part of Southern Californiaโs architectural legacy. Heโsย well known for his sumptuous residential designs for movie stars, entertainmentย and businessย leaders, mastering a range of styles from Southern Colonial toย Spanish Colonial, from Hollywood Regency to Modern. While residential designย would remain an important part of hisย practice, in the course of hisย five-decade career, Williams designed thousands of buildings of all types,ย served on many municipal, state and federal commissions, and was active inย political and social organizations earning the admiration and respect of hisย peers.
โTheย Creative Collaboration of Paul R. Williams and A. Quincy Jones,โ February 16,12:30ย PM, $12
The dynamicย working relationship between Paul R. Williams and his former employee A. Quincyย Jones is evidenced in two striking projects in Palm Springs: the Palm Springsย Tennisย Club Addition completed in 1947, and the Town and Country Restaurantย completed in 1948. Shortly after the tennis club was completed, Williams andย Jones were commissioned toย remodel the Top of the Ramp restaurant, whichย required using the existing footings and basement. Situated within the Town andย Country Center, an early mixed-use complex in Palmย Springs, the sweepingย entrance stairs and dramatic cantilevered canopy of the restaurant drew theย public in to a warm space with furniture designed by Charles and Ray Eames.ย Thisย presentation will explore the collaborative relationship between Williamsย and Jones.
โFromย Googie to Gehryโ examines the formal and theoretical inventions pioneered inย California Modernism and their subsequent connections to many of the works ofย well-knownย contemporary firms located in Los Angeles. Topics covered include anย embracing of experimentation, a keen interest in the relationship ofย architecture and the commercial, and of courseย the interaction of โindoors andย outdoorsโ only possible in the mild California climate. Following theย presentation, Christopher Mount and William Menking will engage in a livelyย discussionย on the state of todayโs architecture in Southern California. The presentationย will be on February 23 at 9 AM and tickets are $12.

Los Angelesย Conservancy President & CEO Linda Dishman shares stories of how herย nonprofit group has worked to save significant modern buildings from demolitionย in โLearning Fromย Los Angeles: Strategies for Saving Modern Buildings.โ Duringย the presentation, Dishman will reveal strategies and tactics that have ralliedย community support, convinced privateย developers, and sparked action fromย elected officials to successfully preserve dozens of historic structuresย throughout Los Angeles County. It will be held February 18 at 12:30 PM.ย Ticketsย are $12.
Theย Dymaxion House is a futuristic dwelling machine designed by Buckminster Fullerย in the mid-1940โs as a prototype tension structure. This innovative projectย will be profiled in aย special presentation called โDymaxion House โ R.ย Buckminster Fullerโs 1946 Futuristic Dwelling Machine.โ Constructed from aย lightweight aluminum-copper alloy and meant to be mass-produced in aircraftย factories, it was going to solve Americaโs housing crisis after WWII andย included many futuristic, labor-saving innovations. In the years following theย prototypeโsย construction, The Dymaxion House was modified, exposed to theย outdoor environment, and the structure was eventually abandoned. The Henry Fordย Museum of American Innovation inย Dearborn MI acquired it in 1991 and undertookย a three-year conservation program. In 2001, it opened as a permanent exhibitionย in the museum. This presentation will tell the story of theย development of theย Dymaxion House, the initial conservation program and changes that have beenย made over the years to accommodate visitor traffic, as well discuss how Theย Henryย Ford, a large indoor/outdoor American history attraction, approachesย sustainable, long-term operational/interactive exhibitions.ย ย It will take place on February 20 at 10:30 AM.ย Tickets areย $12.
Inย anticipation of the upcoming new film โIncredibles 2,โ to be released June,ย 2018, Modernism Week welcomes Pixarโs Oscar-winning production designer Ralphย Eggleston to discussย how Eggleston and his production team of artists,ย illustrators and designers use real world architecture and design to supportย storytelling and present a fascinating behind-the-scenesย look at the elaborateย creative process of animation. Fans of โThe Incrediblesโ remember the veryย modern look and feel of the animated film inspired by modernist icons โ aย visual tour ofย urban architecture, furniture and dรฉcor featuring intelligentย mutations of some classic midcentury modern designs. โDisneyโขPixarโsย INCREDIBLES 2 โ Storytelling with Art & Architectureโย will be on Februaryย 18 at 2 and tickets are $12.
In additionย to these and many other compelling presentations, talks and panel discussions, Modernismย Week will also offer a newย Architecture and Designย Film Series. Created inย conjunction with theย American Documentary Film Festival (AmDocs), the inaugural Architecture andย Design Film Series will beย heldย over three days on the big screen at the Camelotย Theater, located atย 2300 E. Baristo Road in Palm Springs andย will feature 26 films, documentaries andย short filmsย grouped into 14 programs. Most programs are priced at $12,ย with theย exception of two feature films.ย ย A special VIP screening pass, which provides entry to all films in theย series, is available for $159.
