Mizell Senior Center is proud to announce that we have received a $25,000.00 grant from the Auen Foundation to support expansion of the A Matter of Balance senior falls prevention program into the Eastern Coachella Valley. The Auen Foundation was one of the first local foundations to recognize the epidemic of falls among seniors in the Coachella Valley and has provided early, critical support for this program. Mizell Senior Center is grateful to receive this vital support in order to help expand this important senior falls prevention program to the underserved communities of the Eastern Coachella Valley.
The A Matter of Balance program is an evidence based senior falls prevention program that is currently offered by Mizell Senior Center at many locations in the Coachella Valley including senior centers, medical providers, community groups and country clubs. Over 300 seniors have graduated from this eight session program in just the past year and have shown a marked reduction in their fear of falling as well as maintaining a regular exercise regimen. This funding by the Auen Foundation will help expand this program to Indio, Coachella, LaQuinta and low income areas of the Eastern Coachella Valley and will include Spanish language courses.
Mizell Senior Center has been serving Palm Springs and surrounding communities for over 42 years, and is the community focal point on healthy and active aging. This is a place where Active Adults of all ages come together for service and activity which enhances dignity, supports independence and encourages involvement in and with the community.
