Mizell Center announced a new collaboration with Independence at Home, SCAN Health Plan’s Community Service arm, to expand its substantial library of virtual programming for older adults. The library includes a diverse menu of no-cost online classes and programs, which can be accessed via Zoom. To register for classes, go to: https://mizell.org/all-programs/#categories
The partnership with SCAN enables the development of online classes and topic offerings via Zoom so seniors can continue to connect with friends and meet new people, helping to reduce feelings of isolation. Loneliness and isolation pose a serious threat to the health and wellbeing of older adults, but never more so than under the shelter-in-place orders necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Mizell Center introduced virtual programming in August, providing opportunities for 55+ adults to stay physically and mentally active while restoring a sense of community and belonging. Mizell’s popular fitness and social programs will now be augmented by the richness and diversity of SCAN’s Independence at Home offerings, which include music appreciation, the art of personal storytelling, and a number of timely health and wellness classes and practices. These interactive programs will be available at no cost to participants.
“Mizell Center is thrilled to collaborate with IAH to provide their excellent programming for older adults at no cost,” said Wes Winter, Mizell Center Executive Director. “During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been working hard to ensure that older adults are connected while staying at home by offering ways for them to interact with friends and meet new people because we know this helps reduce feelings of isolation. These new offerings will allow us to provide exciting and compelling programming as we continue to serve our community through our greatly expanded Meals on Wheels program.”
