The greater Palm Springs area is known as one of the best LGBTQ+ locations in the world, it is also home to many LGBT organizations, businesses, publications, and events, and that is the focus of this year’s exhibition. It will tell the origin stories of 13 local LGBT organizations, businesses, and events, taking a look back and celebrating their accomplishments and their milestone anniversaries this year.
Trying to answer the question of why gays & lesbians were drawn here to the greater Palm Springs area; was it for the beauty, weather, isolation, or the tendency to live and let live? So many questions and so few answers, at least in any one place from any one source! Working with a small group of community leaders, the LGBTQ+ History and Archives of the Desert trying to answer those questions and more by collecting, preserving, and making accessible the LGBTQ+ history of the Greater Palm Springs Area within the Coachella Valley. “It’s exciting to see what treasures people have saved throughout the years”, said Julie Warren, one of the Co-Founders and Co-Directors.
Still in its infancy, The LGBTQ+ History & Archives of the Desert is always looking for documents and memorabilia from bars, inns, restaurants, publications, LGBT organizations, and individuals.
