The Palm Springs Plaza Theatre Foundation has announced that J.R. Roberts, its President and one of the driving forces behind the Theatre’s historic restoration, will step down from the Board of Directors at the Foundation’s annual meeting on October 14. Roberts, who has led the organization since its earliest days, will remain in his role until the meeting and has committed to staying closely involved with the Theatre and Foundation in the years ahead.
Roberts’ leadership has been central to the Plaza Theatre’s revival. When the City of Palm Springs determined the landmark should be restored, Roberts was asked to spearhead fundraising and oversee the project—a role that expanded as he helped establish the Foundation, develop its management model, and guide the Theatre through its $34 million restoration. His work included assembling an all‑volunteer board, collaborating with architects and contractors, bringing Oak View Group on board to manage operations, and shepherding the Theatre through its reopening in December 2025.
Foundation Vice President Kevin J. Corcoran praised Roberts’ “unwavering dedication,” noting that his passion for historic preservation and commitment to Palm Springs were instrumental in returning the Theatre to active use. Roberts echoed that sentiment, calling the restoration “the greatest accomplishment of my professional life” and expressing pride in the diverse, community‑driven board that helped bring the project to fruition.
Although stepping down from the Board, Roberts emphasized that his involvement with the Theatre will continue. He plans to support the Foundation as it enters its next chapter—one focused on long‑term sustainability, continued fundraising, and expanding high‑quality programming for the community.
The Plaza Theatre, originally opened in 1936, has long been a cultural cornerstone in Palm Springs, hosting Hollywood premieres, major performers, and serving as the original home of the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Today, following its extensive restoration, it stands as a revitalized venue supporting arts organizations and community events throughout the Coachella Valley.
