Whether it’s social security, the arts, veterans benefits, SCORE, trans rights in the military, homeless services, women’s reproductive rights, the park service — it’s a time of alarm. For many who rely on the government’s services and the rule of law that we have been used to, our world has been turned upside down.
Those of us in the media who help shed light on these injustices are also under scrutiny and attack. The trade turmoil throughout the world has also thrown our tourism-driven economy here In the Coachella Valley into question.
And it has hit home with KGAY Radio. Our advertising revenue is down and costs of operation are up. That’s especially true for our worldwide streaming which costs over $5,000 per month. You hear John Taylor talking about the far flung places where people are listening to KGAY and finding it a source of inspiration and entertainment.
So now, we will need to rely on listener support to continue to fund our streaming operations and the LGBTQ content that you’ve come to rely on. We want to keep streaming to the world and be “The Pride of the Planet” whether you’re in California, Calcutta or Canada.
I chartered the company as a public benefit corporation putting purpose over profit when we formed in 2021. COVID was ending and I purchased it from the owners who had already invested heavily to create QChella Media. (That was the non-profit formed in 2019 to get KGAY off the ground.) While that organization went away during COVID, the owners wanted KGAY to be in the hands of LGBTQ ownership.
On August 2, 2021 we were able to bring back our original air staff of John Taylor and Program Director Chris Shebel, and expand our efforts to serve the community. We’re doing this for both the love of radio that we share, and to entertain and inform a worldwide audience. Plus, it is a great “love letter from Palm Springs” which enhances our destination.
I hope you’ll support us in our efforts to subsidize streaming services and help us keep shining the light on what’s happening worldwide in the LGBTQ+ communities we serve. We’re not looking for large amounts. Rather, just a small subscription to help us keep the streaming going during this shortfall.
