I look to “accentuate the positive…eliminate the negative” as the old song goes. So I stay away from most of our local Facebook groups that love to amplify someone being wronged with bad service at a restaurant, a pothole that isn’t filled or a piece of art not to their liking.
So today, let’s ‘stop and smell the roses’ – or in our case appreciate the superbloom that’s taking shape in our local deserts and mountains.
The greening of the mountainsides is already spectacular, especially when clouds partially block the rays of sun and create a highlight that can extend across an entire range. It’s especially noticeable at first light and at dusk. Gary Dorothy (Imageville) must be having a field day with his camera! Speaking of fields, the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, Joshua Tree and Death Valley will come into spectacular focus. It’s worth a road trip.
Now that’s a post on social media I’ll be happy to view and give a thumbs up to! Just don’t look for Gary there.

The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens presents Glow in the Park on select nights from March 16–April 28, and This Thursday, March 21 it’s Glow with Pride, their inaugural pride event, from 6:30–10 pm. Palm Springs AIDS Memorial Town Hall Listening Session
The Palm Springs AIDS Memorial Sculpture Task Force will hold a free community listening session on Wednesday, March 20 from 6–7 pm at Temple Isaiah Palm Springs. The task force will gather input about the proposed AIDS Memorial that they will donate to the City of Palm Springs, to be installed in the Downtown Park. After this feedback is reviewed, the Task Force will then present a new design for the memorial that embodies the feelings and sentiments of the community. More info
13th AmDocs Film Festival
The 13th Annual American Documentary and Animation Film Festival takes place March 21–25 at the Palm Springs Cultural Center. Opening Night on Thursday, March 21 will feature Superpower, in which Sean Penn and his film team face tremendous odds while set to film an interview with Volodymyr Zelenskyy as war breaks out in Ukraine. Penn will be in attendance to discuss the film and the impact of the Ukraine war and to receive the “Seeing The Bigger Picture” award. Palm Springs International Pride Hockey Tournament
The 2024 Palm Springs International Pride Hockey Tournament is Thursday–Sunday, March 20–24 at The Berger Foundation Ice Plex at Acrisure Arena. Finals will take place in Acrisure Arena Sunday, March 24 at 11am. All games are free to come watch and parking is free. On Friday Night, tournament sponsor Tool Shed presents the Play Harder Party at 9. pm. On Saturday Night, it’s a Jock Auction at The Barracks at 9 pm. Each week Kim Kieler leads a variety of hikes for Lesbians in the Greater Palm Springs area. Where the Bears Are: The Documentary
The Palm Springs premiere screening of A Big Gay Hairy Hit!, the brand new documentary about the hit gay bear web series, Where the Bears Are will have its Palm Springs premiere screening on Wednesday, March 20 at 7 pm at the Palm Springs Cultural Center. The film has been playing festivals all over the U.S. to great acclaim. It is funny, touching and tells the story of how three older, gay, “bears” (Ben Zook, Joe Dietl and Rick Copp) working in Hollywood, tired of having their gay-themed ideas rejected by the studios, decided to self-produce their own web series. Modernism Week and The Palm Springs Public LIbrary present The Work of Architect William F. Cody, Designer of the Library and Many Desert Gems on Wednesday, February 21 from 6–7:30 pm at the main library. Catherine Cody, his daughter, will share stories, photos and more about his themes and inspiration. Cody made his mark with elegant, timeless buildings that are considered masterpieces of desert modern architecture. The Secret Garden Immersive Musical Production
Musical Theatre University (MTU) and Palm Springs Art Museum, in association with Neon Noir (Jesse Singer, founder), present an immersive and atmospheric musical production of The Secret Garden from March 22–31 at 7 pm at the Palm Springs Art Museum. This multi-sensory musical journey throughout the museum’s galleries and garden spaces is directed by David Green of MTU, featuring a cast of 20 students from the Palm Springs Unified School District.
