The horror comedy, with music by Alan Menken and book/lyrics by Howard Ashman, premiered off-off-Broadway in 1982. Ashman wrote that his goal was to satirize science fiction, “B” movies and musical comedy itself. The off-Broadway production at the Orpheum Theatre in Manhattan won both the Drama Desk Award and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical.
