Should We "Stay Woke"?

The original meaning of the word “woke” as used in African American vernacular English was to be aware of how the black community was being oppressed by the larger society. The term has evolved to be shorthand for a myriad of progressive values and objectives. Increasingly, the political right has associated the term with excesses of some who are pursuing these objectives. Even some Democrats, like President Obama, have warned against these excesses. Given that the political right has effectively weaponized the term, should the political left abandon the term all together or fight to restore its meaning in the fight for justice, equality, and inclusion?
