We’re thrilled to announce that Oswit Land Trust is celebrating our fifth anniversary - and we’re planning a very special event to commemorate this incredible journey we’ve been on together.
Our story began in 2016, when Jane Garrison was admiring the natural beauty of Oswit Canyon and learned from a fellow hiker that there were plans to destroy the canyon by building hundreds of homes. A group of neighbors immediately sprang into action and Save Oswit Canyon (SOC) was born. For five years, SOC led a determined campaign to protect the canyon - collecting over 5,000 signatures from residents, organizing a city initiative, hosting fundraisers, engaging in a hard-fought legal battle, and rallying community support.
Finally, in October 2020, victory came - SOC purchased 114 acres in Oswit Canyon, made possible through grants from state and federal agencies, the City of Palm Springs, and countless generous donors.
Oswit Land Trust is Born!
Inspired by this success, Save Oswit Canyon evolved into Oswit Land Trust in 2020, recognizing that many other places like Oswit Canyon also need protection. In just five years, thanks to your incredible support, we have saved ten properties totaling 11,200 acres. We have grown to 10 staff, 200 volunteers, added agricultural conservation easement and environmental education divisions, and became a leading voice for wildlife. And we are just getting started!
