Meet Matthew Shuman: A Historic Day with the American Legion in Palm Springs

Join American Legion Owen Coffman Post 519 for a historic visit from Matthew Shuman, who is set to become the first openly gay National Commander of the American Legion.

Palm Springs will welcome Shuman on Friday, November 13, 2026, for two special gatherings celebrating leadership, service, inclusion, and the evolving legacy of one of America's most recognized veterans' organizations.

With approximately half of Post 519's membership identifying as LGBTQ+, the Palm Springs chapter represents a distinctive intersection of military service and community pride.

Later that afternoon, the community is invited to a town hall gathering with Shuman at American Legion Post 519. This free event offers an opportunity to hear from a future national leader and engage with the organization's continuing commitment to veterans and community service.
