Desert Stonewall Democrats September Membership Meeting

The Desert Stonewall Democrats September Membership Meeting will take place on Tuesday, September 19, 2023 at Mizell Center / Community Room at 6 pm.

The topic for the meeting is Empowering LGBTQ Youth: Building Resilience Through Community Support Plus Another Endorsement for 2024

With LGBTQ+ rights under attack across the nation and even here in California, what can we do to ensure that our youth, who may be unsure of their sexuality, are supported and protected while they figure it out?  Our speakers this month:

Tori St Johns
Tori is a Counselor with the Student Assistance Program at Desert Sands Unified School District, secretary of the Riverside University Health Systems Behavioral Health Commission, chair of the RUHS Children’s Mental Health Committee, a Board member for the Regional Access Project Foundation (RAP) and chairs the Health/Mental Health Initiative Committee. Tori is also a Board member with Safe Schools|Desert Cities serving as GSA Liaison.

Eric Ornelas
Eric joined the Board in 2018 and became President of Safe Schools|Desert Cities in 2020 after serving for many years as a volunteer DJ at numerous events.  Eric is a full-time communications & public affairs coordinator at The Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands in Rancho Mirage. Eric is also an experienced radio producer. He currently hosts the Tuesday and Thursday editions of the KGAY Retro Lunch at KGAY 106.5 FM, Palm Springs.

Safe Schools Desert Cities empowers area Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, Intersex youth (LGBTQI+), their allies and GSA advisors and offers opportunities that foster a sense of community and individual growth by providing education, guidance, advocacy, resources, recreational activities and opportunities for self expression.

Also this month we will vote on endorsing Rep. Raul Ruiz for his re-election in 2024.
Please note:   Only members who have been in good standing for at least 60 days prior to the meeting are eligible to vote. Lapsed members, whose membership has expired within 180 days of the meeting, are allowed to vote provided that they pay membership dues prior to the endorsement vote.  Proxy voting and absentee voting is not permitted.
