The Welwood Murray Memorial Library opened its doors on Wednesday, February 19, 1941. It not only housed the nearly 4,000 books owned by the Library (the facility’s initial capacity was 30,000), but it also provided a downtown home for the fledgling Palm Springs Desert Museum  . Library Director Dorothy Bear and then Palm Springs Desert Museum Director, Lloyd Mason Smith, proudly shared the dedication ceremony spotlight, knowing that this marked the beginning of a new era for both institutions.
