Dezart Performs 2026-2027 Plays

Season 19: Awardโ€‘Winning Theatre and Bold New Voices

Dezart Performs (dezartperforms.org) launches its 2026โ€“2027 Season with COME FROM AWAY, running November 18โ€“December 6, 2026. Featuring book, music, and lyrics by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, the internationally celebrated musical recounts the true story of how the people of Gander, Newfoundland opened their homes and hearts to thousands of stranded travelers in the days following 9/11. With its soaring score, humor, and deeply human storytelling, the production sets the tone for a season centered on compassion, resilience, and connection.

The season continues with the Obie Awardโ€‘winning comedy HURRICANE DIANE by Madeleine George (January 20โ€“February 7, 2027). This sharp, magical, and wildly funny play reimagines the Greek god Dionysus as Diane, a charismatic gardener who upends the lives of suburban women while challenging their ideas about nature, desire, and control.

Next, the 2024 Pulitzer Prize winner for Drama, PRIMARY TRUST by Eboni Booth (March 3โ€“21, 2027), offers a warm and poignant story about stepping beyond the familiar. When Kennethโ€™s predictable life is disrupted, he discovers that healing, friendship, and unexpected opportunities may be waiting just outside his comfort zone.

Season 19 concludes with THE REMAINS by Ken Urban (April 14โ€“May 2, 2027), a compassionate and incisive comedyโ€‘drama about one of the first legally married sameโ€‘sex couples in America. As Theo and Kevin gather their families for a seemingly ordinary dinner, longโ€‘buried truths surface, challenging assumptions about love, commitment, and the complexities of modern relationships.

New Season subscription packages go on sale July 29, 2026.

A New Era for the Dezart Playhouse

The 2026โ€“2027 Season coincides with the completion of Phase Two of the adaptive reuse of the historic 1957 First Church of Christ, Scientistโ€”an architectural landmark designed by Robson Chambers and Albert Freyโ€”into the Dezart Playhouse at 605 S. Riverside Drive in Palm Springs.

Architect Susan Secoyโ€‘Jensen has guided the transformation, preserving the buildingโ€™s midcentury modern character while creating a fully modern performing arts center.

Phase One, completed in October 2025, delivered a fully equipped theatre with a new stage, lighting grid, electrical upgrades, four dressing rooms, and a company breakroom.

Phase Two introduces elevated theatreโ€‘style seating for improved sightlines, a fullโ€‘service lobby bar, ADAโ€‘compliant restrooms, and upgraded plumbing throughout the building.

The Playhouse also features Studio 605, a 6,000โ€‘squareโ€‘foot rehearsal hall with industrialโ€‘grade flooring, dance mirrors, and dedicated storage for props, costumes, and production equipment. The expanded facility will serve as a cultural hub for performances, community gatherings, educational programs, and special events throughout the Coachella Valley.
