The Desert Stonewall Democrats issued a strong statement of support following the Palm Desert City Councilโ€™s recent decision to uphold Pride displays within the city. The vote came after Mayor Pro Tem Joe Pradetto requested action to remove the displays, prompting a significant community response across the Coachella Valley.

Residents, business owners, advocates, and civic leaders from all nine valley cities mobilized quickly, demonstrating broad regional support for LGBTQ+ visibility. Their collective engagement, according to the organization, played a decisive role in ensuring that equality remained the guiding principle of the Councilโ€™s decision.

Frank Figueroa, Chairman of the Desert Stonewall Democrats, emphasized that the outcome reflects the communityโ€™s commitment to standing together when inclusion is threatened. He noted that equality in the Coachella Valley is nonโ€‘negotiable and that any attempt to diminish recognition of a protected community will be met with organization, accountability, and resolve.

The organization also highlighted the broader implications of removing Pride displays. Such actions, they stated, send signals to residents, visitors, employers, and investors about who is welcome. In a region whose economy relies heavily on tourism, hospitality, small business growth, and workforce attraction, these signals carry real consequences.

Vice Chair Ruth Debra underscored that the issue extended beyond banners or displays. It was fundamentally about dignity and visibility for LGBTQ+ residents, and the Councilโ€™s vote affirmed that principle.

Stephen Nelson, Coโ€‘Chair of the groupโ€™s Political Action Committee, added that the outcome reinforces the importance of civic engagement. He affirmed that the organization will continue identifying and supporting candidates who prioritize equality, inclusion, and responsible governance in the upcoming election cycle and beyond.

The Desert Stonewall Democrats reiterated their commitment to advancing equality, protecting LGBTQ+ visibility, and ensuring that local leadership reflects the values of the communities they serve throughout the Coachella Valley.
