The Desert Rose Playhouse, a pioneering LGBTQ+ theatre company going into its 10th Season, has launched an education branch which will provide a safe, welcoming, and inclusive space for the LGBTQ+ youth (and their youth allies) to participate and learn from local performing arts professionals the many aspects of the performing arts. With the new education branch of the theater, Safe Space Performing Arts, The Desert Rose Playhouse will continue innovating and educating for a new group of the community.
Focusing on a summer program of inclusiveness, openness, and community building, the performing arts will be a perfect background for those to come and learn while building bonds of friendship and community that a summer program often provides.
“We are truly excited to launch this program”, says new Director of Education and Outreach, Jeff Wallach. “We see a need for our youth within the LGBTQ+ community and we are honored to provide it for them. The Desert Rose Playhouse has provided the community with a place to go and see ourselves on the stage and in the storytelling, now it’s time for our youth to have that opportunity and voice.”
Moving forward, Safe Space Performing Arts is projecting a year-round program with fully-staged plays and musicals planned, as well as master classes in the performing arts. In addition to the classes and productions, an internship program is in the works for our LGBTQ+ youth (and allies) who are 16+ to work alongside the industry professionals from the Desert Rose Playhouse and learn the ins and outs of all aspects of the theatre (Stage Management, Front of House, Costuming, Backstage, Producing, Assistant Directing, et al).
