The California Desert Chorale celebrates the holiday season with its 30TH annual Winter Concert, “Holiday Swingin’ & Singing’,” led by Artistic Director Tim Bruneau and performed by 32 choristers accompanied by a chamber orchestra. Presented in two acts, the festive concert is open to the public Sundays, December 11 and 18, 2022 at 3:00 p.m. at the Hope Lutheran Church in Palm Desert, CA.

“The Chorale’s classical skills will be revealed in two marvelous pieces by Baroque composer Johann Pachelbel, the famous “Canon in D” and the sparkling “Magnificat in G,” Bruneau said. “Additionally, the singers will open the concert with an homage to music called “The Awakening” by Joseph M. Martin and present the stirring “Chanukah Suite” by award-winning Broadway composer, Jason Robert Brown.”

“Singing the words ‘Let music never die in me, forever let my spirit sing’ from Joseph Martin’s “The Awakening” at a recent rehearsal, I was struck by how they truly expressed the feeling of Chorale members and of their desire to spread the joy of music to all,” said Julie Williamson, California Desert Chorale board president. “As we seek to rebuild in a post-pandemic world, the healing power of music is more vital than ever.”

In addition to the classical pieces mentioned above the chorale will also be singing fun, toe-tapping holiday favorites including:

  • Cool Yule by STEVE ALLEN, arr. KIRBY SHAW
  • This Christmas by PINKZEBRA
  • A Doo-Wop Christmas by KIRBY SHAW
  • Irving Berlin’s Christmas by IRVING BERLIN, arr. MARK BRYMER
  • Christmas Celebration by TRADITIONAL, arr. KENNETH ABELING
  • The Chanukah Song (We Are Lights) by STEPHEN SCHWARTS, arr. NOWLIN
  • Swing into Christmas by J. GARLAND, W. KENT & J. LIVINGSTON, arr. MAC HUFF
  • The Virgin Mary Had a Baby Boy by TRADITIONAL JAMAICAN, arr. BRUCE MANGUM
  • Swingin’ at Santa’s Place by KIRBY SHAW
  • Let There Be Peace on Earth by C. MILLER & J. JACKSON, arr. TIM BRUNEAU

Spreading as much opportunity as joy, proceeds from the Winter Concert help to support California Desert Chorale programs including annual scholarships and internships. Since inception in 2002, the scholarship competition has helped 23 young singers continue their vocal and choral music study at the collegiate level. Award money is sent directly to the winning students’ colleges.

“I hope that our patrons will be energized and enlivened by our cheerful swing arrangements and also deeply moved and uplifted by the many powerful lyrics expressing the true meaning and value of holiday traditions and celebrations,” said Bruneau.
