I’ll be glad when my mailbox is no longer clogged with doom-and-gloom glossy apocalyptic postcards about our candidates and elected officials. I’ll be happy not to watch endless sets of dueling TV commercials animating those same warnings. And I’ll be happy to see headlines like these take over my newsfeed: “Woman in banana costume hailed as hero after car crashes into bar patio.”
Yes, the end is near. Hopefully figuratively and not literally. We have the 40th Palm Springs Pride to celebrate after Tuesday’s election. But the conclusion of the worst election cycle in our history can’t come soon enough. If the blue wave holds and the new Congress is seated, let’s hope for a check on the terrible two’s that we’ve experienced with Trump in the White House.
If you do a deep dive into the damage caused to just our LGBTQ+ community, the numbers are staggering. GLAAD’s “Trump Accountability Tracker” counts up to over 600 instances, but has stopped at mid-June. The National LGBTQ Bar Anti-LGBTQ+ Executive Order Litigation Tracker lists federal executive orders affecting LGBTQ+ issues alongside active federal court challenges, preliminary injunctions, and lawsuits.
Human Rights Campaign (HRC) releases periodic impact reports and legal updates. We’ll hear much more at Saturday’s Garden Party, the annual Pride weekend fundraiser held this year at the Dinah Shore Estate.
We’ve certainly “Been Included” through exclusion during this administration. But to be included in the solution means voting Tuesday, then fighting for a fair election outcome. It also means supporting the 40th Palm Springs Pride no matter what your politics and who you love. This Pride will be one for the ages — 40 years of progress made for LGBTQ+ rights, visibility and acceptance. While the rollbacks are real, it’s more steps forward than back in balance. Let’s hope the progress can continue again.
Look for the KGAY Desert Guide Welcome Center on Arenas all weekend. Watch for us to lead the Parade on Sunday and hear our DJs performing as well. Our Pride Commemorative t-shirt sale is Friday 3-7 pm. We’re calling it Threads for Hope as we help the Palm Springs AIDS Memorial cross the fundraising finish line. Your contribution of $20 or more gets you one of our shirts. We’ll tell you more below, on our socials and on KGAY all week long.
